A memory expert Dominic O'Brien, has a chapter in his book "How to Develop a Perfect Memory", called 'How to recall 'lost chapters' of your life'. It's basically about thinking of a place when you were young, such as your school classroom, finding a quiet place and spending a little time each day remebering more and more little details, peoples, phrases, etc. Start in one place and expand outwards. Repeat for other places like your home, your town, etc.

Another way is to use the internet to look up things from the right time period, such as pop-song charts (then download them), products, etc.

Talk to family and friends and people of the same age to see what they can remember. Often your experiences are similar and trigger other memories. Lists are quite useful, such as 'At school, what can you remember about each teacher - history, maths, english, sports, etc'.

Pictures often trigger memories. Search for other people's photo of places you knew, on the Flickr photo-sharing site, etc.
