I would love to be a long shoreman, but if not I would settle for working at the docks on the waterfront.

I think the definition of longshoreman is a guy who works on the dock. How about Merchant Marine? Or you could go down to the landing and find out when the various longterm fishing trips are expected in, and apply on a fishing boat. Or you could be a docent on a museum ship if there are any around you. Or if you're young enough, why not the Coast Guard or Navy?

You may be looking for The U.S. Merchant Marine. Try http://www.marad.dot.gov/ . there ar all kinds of links from that page to just about everything you ever wanted to know about being a commercial sailor. A longshoreman is the guy who works on the docks loading & unloading cargo. To find out about those jobs go to the nearest Longshoreman & Dock Workers Union hiring hall.
