I have the EFS 18-55mm lens that came with the camera and it is quite good but, it is a bit lacking if you get out of auto or program modes. I got nothing but confused looking at Canon's website for a better lens. Some will fit only certain digitals. I have all the 35mm film lenses I need so I'm not looking for one that fits both types of camera. However, I would like a lens that is not dedicated to the Rebel should I decide to upgrade my camera in the future. Right now I am looking for a wide angle zoom with large enough aperture to blur background. I haven't been able to achieve this with much success with the 18-55. Any thoughts out there worth looking in to?

Well any Canon lens you buy from now on will work with any newer body Canon SLR. It might not be fully backwards compatible. When looking for a good wide angle a 12mm to 17mm is usually a good choice. Just keep in mind though Canon has a 1.5X magnification to factor in so that 17mm you just bought is a 25mm. If you want a lens that can blur the back ground and has great depth of field buy one that has a aperture with 2.8 or less. Normally 2.8 is all you will find on a zoom or telephoto lens. You can get a 1.8, 1.4 or even a 1 if you get fixed lenses. hope this helps. IM me on yahoo if you have any other questions.

If you've got your center set on a DSLR, then the S3IS is out. A nice digital camera- however handiest get it in case you particularly wish anything extra compact with a unmarried zoom. As some distance as your different offerings- they are all well. The Canon has a couple of additional mega pixels- that is high-quality, however 6mp is particularly all you want. On the turn part, I uncover the Nikon's construct high-quality to think just a little sturdier and it has a couple of extra points. The viewfinder at the D70 is smaller. The package lens at the Canon is not the quality, despite the fact that the Nikon's package lens is not unhealthy for the rate. But- for both, if you'll be able to have enough money it, get a greater lens. Or- you might look ahead to the brand new Nikon D80 with its 10mp sensor. Which is already to be had within the Sony A100 with photo stabilization. I have not noticeable it in individual, however I'd like to seem on the new Pentax K100D- which additionally has photo stabilization developed in. however- together with your offerings, I'd regularly opt for the Nikon D50. It's a great digital camera, now not crippled in points just like the XT, and such a lot suppose it has a greater think than the Canon, despite the fact that now not always greater photo high-quality. Plus, it is to be had for ~ $550 and you've got your alternative of all that extraordinary Nikon glass (i.e. lenses). IT has a greater steady mode, takes SD playing cards, a two.zero" LCD. The prime ISO efficiency is honestly just a little greater at the D50 than the D70, and the shutter liberate extend is just a little quicker at the D50 over the 70 or XT. yeah- the extra I suppose approximately it, move with the D50.

Fast wide angles are rare and expensive.
All of the ultra wides (10-24 ish) are f/4 and worse and EFS (useless if you upgrade to a 5D or a 1Dx with a full frame sensor.)
The Canon 17-85mm is a good walk around lens for $500, but it's not significantly faster than the 18-55, it's a tad weak up to 24mm, and to top it all off - it's also EFS.
The 17-55 f/2.8 is considered the perfect walk around lens for the dRebel for $1050, but again... EFS.
This leaves the Canon 17-40L f/4 for $680 and the 16-35L f/2.8 for $1400.
If you need to go faster than f/2.8, there are a few primes you could consider, such as the Canon 35mm f/2 or f/1.4 ($1100) and the 28mm f/1.8 ($385), but these are hardly wide angle on a dRebel.
And finally, there's a Sigma 20mm f/1.8 for $410. It's wide, it's fast, and it's future-proof. But it gets mixed reviews - try before you buy.

If you don't mind losing a little of the wide angle the 24-85 USm is a very nice lens too.
