It is very obvious why a victory was needed in war world 2.
Why do we need a victory in Iraq? Why do we not need a victory in Iraq.?

Yes, for the sake of not leaving another civil war in our wake and another terrorist training camp.

The only way this will be accomplished however is with another dictatorship.

Saddam knew how to control these people. We are not up for the task nor should we be. The only answer is to install another puppet governement ala Saddam and keep tight reigns on him.
Sad but true.

Democracy WILL NOT WORK with when a percentage of the poplution are religious fanatics that see their own martyrdom as victory.

We did not have to deal with THAT in WWII as the German Soldier valued his own life more than that of his questionable cause.

I think the problem is - this war in Iraq is no longer the same war as it was when we first invaded. I think the definition of "victory" is no longer clear.

What happened is that our invasion into Iraq - which did result in the removal of Saddam & his government - has now trigged a 3-way civil war that our troops are caught in the middle of.

So - to really answer your question - I need to know how you define "victory".

What does it mean for the U.S. to "win" this war?

If you can tell me what those terms mean to YOU - then I think your question can better be answered.

Why was victory necessary in WWII?

The reason I ask is that I feel victory was/is necessary in both.

A US defeat will signal to everyone, friend and foe alike, that we are not willing to fight. Weakness will be challenged, and many, many more Americans and others would die as a result.

Its about prevention, not victory.

Victory would be;
1. killing off all terrorists and potential terrorists
2. The terrorists surrendering

Neither of those scenario's is likely to happen, thus we must prevent terror or make it more difficult for them to operate effectively.

You probably want a functioning government in Iraq so terrorists can't hide there. The goal is to make it difficult for terrorists to operate and to reduce terrorism.

Another goal is to stabilize the region in order to reduce terrorism and to guarantee oil output levels.

Yes it is. The reasons are painfully obvious. Quit listening to scummy libearals and join in the human race.
