Tell him/her:

Children in need is when us and most of your freinds and teachers in school give some of there pennys/money to people in other places that dont have any pennys/money to help them because they need it to buy food and clothes. These children might not have a mummy or a daddy, they might not live in a house, they might not have any water or they might not be able to go to a school and meat some new friends! so children in need is when we help them and the people on the T.V. do funny things to help all the chilldren than need some pennys/money!

I hope this helps!!!

I have a 4 year old and we are going through this also. I tell her that some children don't have a mommy and daddy to love them and tuck them into bed and take care of them and give them food or a home. I tell her that some kids live on the street and also, some have homes and parents, but their parents can't buy any food or toys. I think a child at 4 years understands that better than we think they do. When my 4 yr old starts complaining, I sometimes remind her of these things.

In this world a lot of children have everything they want. Enough food, enough drink, plenty of sweets and loads of birthday presents.
There are also in the world loads of children that have none of these things because they have poor parents or even no parents. These are children in need and we as children and mums and dads should help all those dear little children that have very little or even nothing.

I try and get my kids envolved in any special needs project. Once every couple of months we go through clothes and toys that they don't need anymore and donate them to charity. We also participate in food drives for school and church. I use that time to explain to them how fortunant they are. Once the school I worked for was having summer camp and one day their lunch was a couple of loaves of bread and a community pot of water. Each person tore their bread and used small cups to get room temp. water. They watched a movie about less fortunant children during that time and discussed how blessed they were. Now the kids participating were much older, but I let my 5 yr old watch the other kids...it really hit home for her.

Children learn better when immersed in the experience. In other words don't try to explain it - find an interactive way to show them what Children In Need is, instead. Just use your imagination.

When I was a kid I traveled all over the world with my parents and saw poverty. So exposure is probably quite an eye opening experience. Also, your church could probably help you out. Also, volunteer with your kid. But for a 4 year old, the Berenstain Bears have a series of books. This one will probably help: "The Berenstain Bears Think of Those in Need"

and "Berenstain Bears Lend a Helping Hand"

Do you like poor people in need?

If so just tell the child that some people can't make enough money to buy things like food and clothes so they need people to help them out.

Ask the child about the clothes s/he is wearing, and say how did you get that? If s/he doesn't know say mommy and daddy bought that shirt and pants for you. Ask them about the last meal they ate, What did you eat? After they tell you say mommy and daddy bought the food for you to eat. But there are some people who can't do that. They don't have enough money to go to the store for a shirt or bead, so we help out and give them extra money to buy the things they need.

"You know how you've got toys? And a nice house? And a mummy and daddy who love you? Well some little boys and girls are not as lucky as you and they maybe don't have the things that you do. So lots of grownups get together to make money so that they can help the boys and girls have a happier life like yours"
