Is it just for a tasty treat or is there more to it?

Cat food has higher protein levels than dog food so the waste tastes good to them. You really need to block of the litterbox from your dog. Our basset hound kept getting into the litterbox and kept getting sick mostly do to eating the cat litter itself. finally had to buy a gate that has a small opening for the cats to go thru because he was smart enought to know everything down to get to the litterbox

The same reason my cockerspaniel likes to nose dive into dirty underwear. Or people eat smelley cheese. They like the pungent odor/taste.

Put a fence thet the cat can get under/over, but the dog cant get around, surrounding the litter box. And brush his teeth too!

Dog's are dog's! They think that stuff is a tasty treat, just like horse manure.

It is called Coprophagia in Canines. Cat food tends to be more flavorful than dogs, thats why dogs prefer cat food. When the food goes through the cats digestive tracks some flavor get left in his stool. Making his stool taste good to your dog.The dog also could be missing something in his diet.

I've heard that dogs eat poo because there is something lacking in their diet.

My dog doesn't raid the litter box. He goes for poopy diapers, hah.

Mine do too, don't know why. We put a chain on the basement door that allows the cats to go down but not the dogs.

Hey, if nothing else, it less clean up for you right? LOL :)

Ew, lol. Well, some dogs just eat poo. Try squirting it with a water bottle a little bit if you want it to stop. If you don't get it to stop, it will most likely end up getting worms.
