if this is an older car with "drip rails" the roof racks will slide to the width needed and then clamp on to the rails, use a bit of leather or rubber to protect the paint, dont over tighten the rack as it may bend the drip rail and expect some weird wind noise , good luck , have fun.

number one you spelled Galaxie wrong. Number two what do you mean by "roof rails"? Are you referring to a roof rack, like for carrying skis or luggage? If so why can't they fit in the trunk, which is big enough for a VW???
