Please don't speak for all Travel Agents on how they do business. I always look to get my clients the best prices as well as what will make them happy NOT steer them because they are preferred.
Some agents might do this, however I don't. I just don't like one stereotyping ones career until they are in it themselves.
There are bad agents out there that are ONLY about up selling. I have actually "steered" clients towards properties that were less expensive and I felt was better! All one needs to do is find that good travel agent and stick with them.
Some of these that consumers can book direct. You can and pay the same amount as you do with the company, however they encourage direct sales because then they don't have to pay an agency. So in the long run it is better to just go with an agent. Down the line if you have questions, concerns or needs you have an actual contact person instead of an 800 # waiting for the next available rep.

A travel agency is where a travel agent works.
A travel agent is a person who arranges travel and who is paid on a commission basis, usually. However, since airlines stopped paying commission, travel agents often charge the customer directly for this part of the agency's service (about $20). Hotels, car rentals, cruises, a travel packages still pay a comission to the agent.

a consultant/salesperson who can help you plan your trip. they help you find airline tickets, cruise tickets, hotels, rental car places, etc. they try to steer you to buy trip packages or to use certain hotels/airlines, thus the sales part.
