well the cat is old and the dog is a puppy. your cat probably just like to lay around and groom itself and your puppy wants to play.

just like old people and young children that want to holler and run and jump and play it probably annoys your cat.

I went through the same situation with my old cat and new puppy(though the puppy is now 3 years old).

i made sure that i loved on the cat first and then played with the puppy. the cat was there first so it does not want to feel like it is second best to the puppy.

my cat and puppy still do not like each other they avoid each other at all cost. every once in a while daisy( that's my puppy) will try and play with Baby( that's my cat) and baby will give her a look and daisy will turn around and go play with my other cat that she loves.

They play all the time. I got Evil( that's my other cat) at around the same time as Daisy so they grew up together and love each other. Daisy helped Evil raise the litter of kittens she had( I did not know that Evil was a girl until it was to late).

So it really just depends on the circumstances.

Baby loved the dog that i had at the time that i got her she would sleep with him and clean his ears and everything.

Good luck maybe they will come around

My guess would be the other dogs weren't around as long either. The cat wants more attention and wants you practically to ignore the puppy altogether (which in the animal world would be a signal that the cat is still the dominant animal). I would pay attention more to the cat and a little less to the dog (which will also remind the dog he isn't the dominant animal around). Try to see if you can find a way to keep the cat away when you are paying attention to the dog (if the cat doesn't see it, it doesn't mess with its instinct to be the dominant animal).

Since you had the cat first, she thinks its her house, and probably always will. You puppy is a pack animal and realize that he's lower on the totem poll than her, and will eventually accept her rule. Sorry, that's how it works in the animal kingdom. If you want a feline friend for your puppy, you need to do it in reverse: when he's older, get him a kitten. He will feel like its big brother and protector. Remember, You cat is Queen of her Castle, give her the respect she's earned!

GUARD your puppy for now! Cats can be wicked clawing at puppy's eyes and such. They will work it out eventually, but I wouldn't let the puppy out of my sight around the cat just yet.
