Dutch is a very hard language to learn because of those sneaky little bastards called Diphthongs... I would teach you what I do know, but I am self taught and have made HUGE errors myself!

Thank God the Dutch people are an English speaking country and are very gracious and patient with errors. Not like the French who will spit at you for butchering their language...

I'm a bit of a linguist, and all of the languages I do know were self taught. It takes just a bit more than just a little of someones time even if you are a fast learner because it is just so very different from the American language and lettering system and use of sounds and letters that correspond to those particular sounds.

It is hard... Try Pimsler tapes/Cd's. They are the best out there for the money!

Here is some pronounciation help...

b, c, f h, k , l, m, n, p, q, t, x, y, and z.
are the same as in English.

ch as in loch) is pronounced kh as in nacht
d with an ending accent of t at the end.
g - ch as in loch or rarely zh as in pleasure (zhernrer)
i - y as in yes, ia or ya
r - rolled in the front of the mouth at the beginning or
in the middle of a word. Rijst or (Reyst.)
s - Always hard as in pass
sch - s followed by ch. Skh, (skhrayvern)
v - as in english f Vader or (Faader)
w - as in the english v Water (Vaater)

I learnt quite a bit by speaking to a lot of ducth people I met on the internet through irc channels and msn.

I joined a community that had many dutch members and we talked every day in the chatrooms and on voice chat aswell so by asking and watching I got to learn quite a bit although not enough to teach anybody else im sorry.

I dont speak dutch, but I do have advice.

Go to online chat groups and track down someone from
Holland who would like to help you out.

Do you live near a university or college. Does it have a
language department. If it does, I'm sure there would be students there who could help out.

Have you started with Dutch language DVD's or tapes in your
local bookstore?
