Any painful/uncomortable tests?

The initial exam is just a medical history and history about your acid reflux, how often, only when certain foods are eaten, do you nearly vomit the acid when it raises, how you sleep at night with it, raised on pillows ect. The doctor will also palpate your stomach and esophagus to see if it is swollen, inflamed. If he determines that you have acid reflux he will give you a prescription for Nexium, Prilosect, ect.. He will probably want to schedule you for another exam to scope your esophagus to see if there are any lesions, polyps, erosion's from the reflux. They will temporarily put you to sleep and you wont feel a thing! You will be very tired for several hours following it but its not painful at all. Good luck! As in the answer below, the Berinstine test is only in extreme cases.

Please see the webpage for more details on Bernstein test.
The Bernstein test is a method to reproduce symptoms of heartburn. It is usually done with other tests to measure esophageal function.
How the test is performed
The test is done in a laboratory. A nasogastric (NG) tube will be inserted through your one side of your nose and down into your esophagus. Mild hydrochloric acid will be sent down the tube, followed by saline (salt water) solution. You will be asked to tell the health care team about any pain or discomfort you have during the test.
You may have a gagging feeling and some discomfort when the tube is put into place. The acid may cause symptoms of heartburn. Your throat may be sore after the test.
The test attempts to reproduce symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (stomach acids coming back up into the esophagus).

No, no painful tests. Mostly just questions about your digestion such as what type of foods do you eat ? When does this occur ? Do you throw up ? It's much more complicated than that as I am sure you already know. I constantly have to take Prilosec. It's better than Nexium.
