It is because that is how the theater makes it's money.
They only get 25% of the movie tickets the rest goes to Hollywood.
So when you consider a movie that gets 150 people at $10.00 a ticket and they only get $2.50 per person they have to make their money in other ways. Such as that $5.00 soda which only cost them about 3 cents.
It's economics baby

You're not supposed to bring in your own stuff so if you want anything you have to pay whatever price they set for the stuff you want. Invest in a large purse. The initial cost will be a bit higher, but the long run savings of bringing in your own munchies will quickly start saving you oodles of money. :)

That is the revenue and money the theatre actually takes in. They use that money to pay their employees and their expenses. Theatres make very little money on ticket sales...that goes back to the movie people most of the time.

On average, the movie studio gets 90% of the ticket sales, depending on the contract. High food prices are the only way that theaters can make money and stay in business.

where I am it costs almost €20 per person for a ticket, food and a drink, its ridiculous. you're not supposed to bring in your own food and there's signs saying they have the right to check your bags! :D

They figure since they tell you that you can't bring your own food and drinks into the movies, that they can charge whatever they want and you will still buy it!

It's how they make a profit. That's why everything is super-sized at the cinema as well.

Honestly because we will pay it. If sales dropped they would lower the prices until sales picked up. Would you lower your prices if the product was selling at the set rate?
