I am an economics student interested in possibly working for the government in foreign policy. I am fluent in spanish, but plan on learning another. I was thinking maybe Arabic, Farsi, or Hindi but I'm not sure which would be the most beneficial.

You should also consider Mandarin, since that's a growing market for consumers.

I'm not sure the answer is as simple as picking a language . . .

Languages, while inherently valuable to know, are not universally valuable (in every situation).

You should take into consideration where you plan on living. Learning Greek is incredibly valuable if you live and work in an area with a large Greek population. Learning Arabic is only especially valuable if you plan on living or working with a large Arabic population.

The purpose of learning a language is that you want to be able to communicate with people, fluently, in that language. It doesn't really help to pick up a language that no one in your area understands. . .

Consider what jobs you are looking for after you graduate. Are you thinking of working in any particular country, or working with U.S. relations with any particular country? If so, consider learning the language of that country.

The U.S. is particularly interested in Arabic in general now, since 9/11, so that's a good general choice.

Definitely chinese. Although it is difficult to learn, it is extremely useful. China is developing fast and there are many oppurtunities to pursue. I live in shanghai and I know for a fact that you can easily rake in 100 grand plus if you have a proficient grasp of chinese and you work in a consulate or the embassy.

I don't know, I took sign language as a second language. If I were you I would do some research and see what seems to be most prevalent. i was going to say Spanish, however, no need. God bless.
