It depends what strength and from which family of compounds the pain relief will be. Taking something like an NSAID (ibuprofen - high dose [600-800 mg]) will be fine. No major problems with side-effects. Others (opiods) like codeine are much stronger and some people can be allergic. However they provide better relief. Then you can go all the way to the other favourite opiod, morphine. This is given by injection so I doubt you could get it plus it's a sedative as well.
I would dose up on some ibuprofen if the pain is bad. No effect then ask for dihydrocodeine tartarate.

Depends on the operation - I've had a number of operations on my knees. The first two I was in huge amounts of pain, to the point I could barely think, so I took painkillers then.
The most recent one, I had pain killers in the afternoon after I'd had the operation in the morning, but the next morning all I wanted were a couple paracetamol to get rid of a headache and I didn't take any after that because, apart from a dull ache, I wasn't in pain.
If you don't feel you want/need to take them - don't! It's silly taking them when you don't need to because you won't get the full benefit when you DO need them!

I had some major, painful surgery, and I got morphine afterward. It was wonderful. You go from incredible pain, to absolutely none - I mean NOTHING.
I saw no reason to be brave. I'd been suffering enough with the problem that caused me to have the surgery. I was glad to have some perfect, painless sleep.
There were no side effects, but some people do feel ill when taking narcotics. Just ask to start with a small dose if you want to try.

I had major surgery and all i ever took was tylenol 3s, depends on your threshold for pain I suppose, everyone is different. The doctors were amazed at how quickly I was recovering,up walking the next day etc. It is totally up to the individual, good luck!

I think it is an individual choice. If you don't want to take them then good for you, personally I would probably take them! However having said that my boyfriends granddad ended up very ill after taking the painkillers as prescribed by doctors after an op, turns out then forgot to tell him to stop taking them!

Pain thresholds vary from person to person. For those with low thresholds, it's hard to believe that someone else can go through the recovery process with little or no medication.
If you don't feel you need pain killers, then don't take them just because others think you should.
Consider yourself fortunate that you don't have to take them.

If you can get by without taking any pain meds, good for you! However, if you ARE in any type of pain, the pain will keep you from healing faster. Take the meds and heal.
