I've never taken any of my dogs to formal training before. however, having a JRT mix as well as a Lab mix with separation anxiety, I'm thinking this time it's out of my hands.

What types of credentials do you look for in a trainer? I'm not looking to do agillity or make them assistance dogs, I just want a couple issues resolved such as socialization for the JRT and how to help ease the separation anxiety for my lab mix.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, my dogs know the basics, and then some. I just feel that a public setting would be great to work on the aggression in my JRT, and I don't want that to be the dog park.

I need to know that the person helping me knows what they're doing. Which is why I asked for what credentials to look for, not whether or not they should go to training. That decision has already been made.

I can't believe someone told me NOT to take my dogs to obedience.

Go to a kennel or training club where the trainers compete in obedience. 'Trainers' at Petsmart are totally clueless and have no business trying to teach training to others.

Certifications like APDT are a bit of a joke amongst long time trainers. Look for some one who will use different methods depending on the individual dog. Some dogs do not respond well to harsh methods, and some do not work well for treats only (IMO it is dangerous to use bribe methods for an aggressive dog). Dogs are individuals and should be treated as such.

Look for someone who trials and titles their dogs, and has students who do the same. Go to a couple schools and watch a class, see what you think before you decide. Good trainers will often have a following.

Petsmart only does basic training. Some of them have been cashiers that decided they liked the training schedule better. If your dogs have the basics don't go there. I would look for a trainer in a pet daycare environment. A great place for advice is a rescue. We deal with every issue under the sun. Any lab or jrt rescue should be willing to help you resolve your problems.

You also want to look for someone who has been successful with many DIFFERENT breeds. Training a hound is nothing like training a border collie. Terriers are in a class by themselves. It's not that they're not smart, it's just that their personaltites and motivations are different, trainers need to be flexible and adapt their methods to the particular dog they're working with.

you don't need a trainer!! Before you leave, and when you get home, do something calm like read or use the computer, watch TV etc. eventually your dogs will learn that its not a big deal when you leave/get home. ;D good luck!
