I took my husband to emergency because he had been throwing up and diarahera for several days. They took blood, xray, ekg, and the final comments were 'the gas patern is most consitent with ileus'? What is ileus? Will he need surgery? He said that he probably had the flu or food poisioning, and he does not need to follow through will his doctor. I think that he needs a lower g.i. to make sure that there is not cancer or blockage in his colon.

He currently take Prisloc for acid refleux.

Please see the webpages for more details on Intestinal obstruction.
ileus-(il'-e-us) [Greek. eileos = intestinal obstruction]. Intestinal obstruction. Usually restricted to paralytic as opposed to mechanical obstruction and characterized by abdominal distension, vomiting and absence of pain.

Ileus, simply, is something that stops the motion of the bowels.

The first of two kinds is obstructive, which is caused by physical obstruction of the bowel, causes include bowel twists (volvulus), tumors and foreign bodies. The treatment is almost always surgical.

The second kind is paralytic ileus, this is where the normal peristaltic motion of the bowel, which moves gut contents through the digestive system is stopped. It is most commonly caused by intra-abdominal surgery but can be caused by infection, injury or some medications.

The presense of diarrhoea, however, suggests that there is no true ilius. The usual symptoms are constipation, moderate to severe discomfort, vomiting and a distended abdomen. Without at least a few of those symptoms, the 'gas pattern' of an AXR looking like ileus is clinically irrelevant. Doctors shouldn't, and in most cases don't, rely on test results, especially if they don't fit the clinical picture.

That isn't to say that there can't be a problem, as said above, if the problem persists - go back.

An ileus is a blockage in the intestine. He needs to not eat for a couple days, only drink water, clear liquids...nothing solid. I can't believe they sent him home from the ER. He needs to pass the stool, but don't have him take any laxatives or stool softners which could rupture his bowel and lead to much worse problems. Try the liquids and get things moving. He really does need medical care. If the vomiting and pain returns definately go to the doc or er.
