In ancient days there was a practice of writing prescriptions in Latin instead of using English. It was to hide the secrets behind the disease and medicines from the patients. That was a practice between the Phamacist and the Doctor. Many Latin terms are still seen in modern prescriptions.Eg:t.i.d>3 times daily,b.i.d.>2 times daily,h.s>horra somna(before sleep) etc. Moreover the Rx symbol at the top of the prescription is also derieved from Latin and now that has become the symbol for a prescription.

Not only in India but in many countries written prescriptions look similar in their ugly appearance with the poor handwriting.I dont believe that these Doctors of modern era need to make secret prescriptions to the pharmacies untill they want a bad deal!!

There are many medicines in the market which are very similar in their spellings but extreme different in their pharmacological actions. We cannot blame only that pharmacist who gave the wrong medicine. It is advised to the pharmacists to counter check the names and dosages with the particular doctor if it found difficult to read. But most of the pharmacy people do mistakes by not doing that, not to lose their business.

I request the whole society to act on this matter.Make all prescriptions electronically and save lives.

I admit that it is very difficult to change our society within a day.So till that step comes leagally the patients should do onething. They should ask the doctor to explain about what they have written before leaving their cabin.Dont afraid to ask as they come under consumer protection acts.

Atlast there are some patients who are suffering a lot because of this but could not do anything! They are in the large line of patients of busy govt hospitals.

We can pray to God for their safety!!

Not all do but I suspect that some drs are in a big hurry and then some drs just naturally have bad handwriting. I've heard my pharmacist call a dr to find out what he prescribed. I imagine, I hope, that they do that more frequently than we will ever know.

If some doctor has good handwriting he will write the prescription in abbreviations. It is done so for discouraging, the patients from noting down the name of the medicine and administering the same on trial-and-error method to some patient.

Self-medication should be avoided as it may be lethal.

If the doctors writing is illegible then Pharmacist will always ring the doctor concerned before dispensing the drugs.
