Play is a child's occupation or job.

A definition of play is 'A physical or mental leisure activity that is undertaken purely for enjoyment or amusement and has no other objective'.
There are other areas of human activity that may also be defined in this way hence the need for contextual elaboration.
'Play’ may assist learning and self development. It can be undertaken by individuals or groups of children spontaneously or as part of a planned activity. There isn’t any intervention so there is no need for clinical supervision, quality management, code of ethics or adult training. The only concern is that there is a physically safe environment. A question often raised today is whether children know how to play. This is probably a philosophical question since children's play is a natural activity essential for their healthy development. It may be that children play differently from their forebears.

Neuroscience research confirms the importance of play for infants in developing children's brains and minds. It has also been shown that exposure to metaphor and symbols, as used in play, has a beneficial effect upon the development of the brain.

To learn. Children's work is play. It is how they discover the world around them, and manage sensory information. Play introduces a child to the elements around them and builds skills such as speech, listening, balance, coordination, math concepts, communication, self-help, role play, and spatial relationships.

Children play to entertain themselves. It is how they learn. They do this by interaction with other people, and they act out what they have seen such as Mummy cooking the dinner, or scenes they have seen on TV such as in films.

It's how they learn. Until they have mastered talking and understanding of words, they do not know they are playing, lol.

Playing teaches social skills, hand-eye coordination, large muscle coordination, etc. Its a vital activity for children.

Because it is the way the learn. Children need to experience things to learn. Also this is the way they can connect to others and develop many skills from social to motor skils. And this way they accumulate their sensorial memory.

Well, because it's fun! I think kids get bored very easily and then they decide to play. Hey, it's better than them annoying you to do something, plus, it helps them develop social skills.

Play teaches them the importance of turn taking and roles. You cover your face, I say where's baby, you uncover your face, I laugh. There is a predictable protoconversation in that. This turn taking, in a normal developing child, will turn into conversational skills.

It's fun. And that's what kids want- FUN! If you won't let them have fun, they'll cry. And won't that annoy you????? And even we want to have fun sometimes. Don't you??? If there was no such thing as "play" or "fun", the world would be dull and boring. Woudn't you just want a joke so badly sometimes?
