She still seems healthy and happy, but lunchtime is a chore! She doesn't like me to feed her with the spoon, so she tries to do it but she can't yet. I'm running out of finger food ideas because she's very picky. She's not big enough yet that I can make her eat things. And she doesn't usually like anything we are eating for dinner. Any help would be wonderful!

When she gets hungry she will eat. This is a phase that most one year olds go through. Give her finger foods so that she can feed herself. You don't have to have many varieties. If you find something that she likes then give it to her. My son lived off of chicken nuggets for the first year after he began eating solids. It was the only thing he would eat. He is a normal, healthy, happy adult now.

Its hard but I think most kids go though this. Just make sure she's at the normal weight and not losing any weight. Give her what she likes to eat and let her eat it with her hands. It will make a mess but she'll get more in her mouth that way than with a spoon. Also if you have friends over ask them if they'll try feeding her. Sometimes kids just don't want their parents to help them eat but will let others.

This is typical. My children (1 and 3) are not big lunch eaters. I have found that if I push them to eat a big lunch they often are not hungry for dinner. My kids like yogurt for lunch every day often refusing anything new. It is tasty and healthy. The Dora yogurt has a thick texture to it so it sticks to a spoon well (good for little hands that want to do it "all by myself") and less sugar than other yogurt.

Don't worry - you little one will eat if she is hungry. I think it is a good idea to let kids learn to listen to their bodies. Often as adults we think we have to force them to 'clean their plate' but this can lead to unhealthy eating habits later in life. The most important thing is to be sure to offer healthy foods.

If she wants to eat with a spoon let her...its time for her to learn anyway. Be sure to put something under her chair so she won't make a mess. This is a good thing that she wants to do it on her own. Try getting her the Gerber toddler foods or chicken kids love nuggets. Try taking a bite of your food and show her how good it is. (MMM yumm!)

I had the exact same problem with my son... I was so worried, asking everyone's opinion.. worried he wasn't getting enough food, everything but he eventually started eating fine.. now he shovels it all in... my biggest problem with him was he wouldn't eat anything soft.. it had to be crunchy-I have no idea- he was to a point where all he would eat was those fruit and veggie puffs, everything else was to soft for him... he would just sit there and mash it between his fingers... but a few months later he was eating fine.. just give it time and keep offering her different foods, different colors, different textures... she'll catch on

SINCE SHE WANTS TO BE INDEPENDENT, I WOULD LET HER. HOWEVER, I WOULD INTRODUCE SOME "PEDIASURE" SHAKES TO HER AS A SUPPLEMENT. THEY COME IN CHOCOLATE, VANILLA, STRAWBERRY, ETC.

MY OLDEST USED TO WORRY ME TO DEATH. SHE JUST DIDN'T EAT VERY MUCH AT ALL. THE DOCTOR SAID THAT SHE WOULD EAT WHEN SHE GOT HUNGRY---BUT THAT DIDN'T MAKE ME FEEL ANY BETTER. AND SO I FOUND THOSE SHAKES AND THEY ARE FULL OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS AND SHE LOVED THEM. SOMETIMES I WOULD MAKE HER A CUP OF IT DILUTED WITH MILK.

HOPEFULLY THIS WILL HELP YOU TOO. GOOD LUCK.

My mother had 4 girls and I remember her telling me that her Doctor told her not to worry about a child not eating much. He told her that she would eat what her body needed.
