sounds like he doesn't "need" anything. maybe do cake and ice cream and take him someplace fun to play with a few playmates. Don't waste money on toys he doesn't need.

Instead of buying him things, create a special memory. Invite special friends or family, take a trip to the zoo, make a special craft together for his party (pinata or plaster body impressions) do something he will remember as his third birthday years down the road. Often children remember the time they spend doing things with loved ones rather than another toy that only gets stuffed in the closet.

Anything Leapfrog... they have a great series of dvds (if he's into tv) that teaches letters and sounds, numbers etc.
Something that will spark creativity, maybe a keyboard.
He's not into books? Maybe try to find ones that are interactive where he can press buttons that talk or make music.
Does he like arts/crafts? Maybe an easel.
Puzzles are great for learning, if you get the chunky ones he'll be able to do them at his age.
Maybe a pet fish... kids that age like to watch them and he'll have fun sprinkling food into the tank with you.
Or you can just find a couple of small items to give him and put the rest of the money that you wouldve spent into an account for him.

My son just turned 3. He wanted a "real 4 wheeler" so that is what we got him. Just ask your son what he wants.
