I have now decided to either get a King charles cavalier, Beagle, Cocker spaniel or Basset Hound. What do you think?

I sort of agree with everyone who said that a puppy brought into a house where there are cats will be fine & get along well with them.

My Irish Setter certainly does.

However, I'm not sure that Huskies do ... I think they are beautiful dogs & belong to a Canine Society that, about four years back, used to do RingCraft Classes - several Huskies used to come along. I knew that the owner was expecting pups in the future & was seriously tempted.

Did a lot of research beforehand though ... thought I could cope with their tendency to run away however I found a site that said even if a Husky was reared with cats, there was a strong likelihood that a future date, the dog could turn on the cat & kill it. I didn't want to risk losing any of my cats so decided against having a Husky puppy.

I've just spent about 20 minutes looking for that site ... and can't find it - instead I've found other sites telling me how good Huskies are with cats - especially if socialised at a young age. This site even has a photo of their huskies with the cat.

Drats - looks like I could have got one!

I'd recommend that you first look for the breed of dog that you'd like to have & then do some research on line to see how they get along with cats ... maybe even posting another question here to owners of the specific breed.

Maybe if answers had been around when I had the opportunity to adopt a Husky, I might actually have done so.

I have three cats and one dog a westie, however I did have one of the cats before I had my westie as a puppy. My dog is now 4 and I have since had two further kittens and she loves them.

All I would suggest that if you have a cat then you take on a puppy rather than take on an older dog. That way they get on together from the beginning.

Be careful if taking on a rescued dog as I intended to do as you do not always know the background and most dogs I was looking to take on could not be homed with cats

Best of luck !!

Personal experience, our Dachshund and our cat are buddies. They cuddle and groom each other regularly and just enjoy each others company.

I would avoid any breeds with a high prey drive, as tho they may not be mean to your cat, they may want to give chase often.

A lot depends on your cat too and how young a dog is when you bring it into your home. A puppy will likely be more used to a cat when grown, where if you bring in a full grown dog, this could be harder to accomplish.

I should think any breed from a puppy, its what they get used to. We've had two german shepherds and the cat was always the boss anyway. You're more likely to have to watch the cats don't take a pup's eye out, especially if you have more than one, they gang up you know! Little devils!

Good luck and be prepared for lots of 'fun', if your cats take to the new addition they might bring presents of the dead ( or worse, live) mice and brids etc.

Most breeds of dogs can live well with cats, as long as they are introduced at an early age. I would stay away from sight hounds, breeds that hunt anything that moves, like greyhounds, whippets ect. They are hard wired to chase anything that moves. I also find huskeys tend to be bad with cats. Herding breeds may try to herd you cats, like Border collies. My Border collie use to round up my cats, he never hurt them and when they where done a swat to the nose or a hiss would give him the hint.

i think the best breed of dog to get when you have cats is any type so long as its a pup. The pup will grow to think that the cat is a friend and not an enemy and the cat in time should get used to the new arrival.

Avoid any sort of terrier. I have always found gun dogs - Labradors or Springer Spaniels get on well with cats. Possibly because they encounter farm cats in their work and will normally only chase other animals on command.

Probably a mongrel mixed breed... they can adapt and don't have alot of the traits passed down through them as pure-breeds...

My dog is a mixed breed (border terrier and Alsatian) and we have 3 cats... she's always been fine with them but it's best to have them together right from pups too... she is 18 years old (bless her) and has always been fine with cats... its the cats who will more of a problem adapting to the dogs...

I disagree with alisha, I have three cats, and added two boxer puppies one at a time, a year apart, and they all get along well, in fact I have not seen a mean bone in these boxers bodies. My husband grew up with boxers, and they are the most gentle, and have the most playful attitude. Its all in how you raise them, if they are raised to be mean, they will be,and I believe that true of any breed.

a large, even-tempered breed, like a yellow lab, Cats could hurt small dogs. But most breeds, except the snappy ones, should be OK if they are raised from a puppy with the cats.
