My 1 1/2 year old cat has just started a really annoying habit of chewing on things. She sits and gnaws on cardboard boxes and potato chip bags. I don't know if her teeth hurt or if she's just discovered the crackly noise it makes. None of my cats have ever done this before. Maybe she just does it because I told her to stop it. Suggestions?

It is mainly die to booredom. Just engage your cats by offering cat toys. Your cat wants something to chew on! Give your cat kitty candy or something cewy like that. this might help, because kitty food that is chewy tastes better than wood! you can buy these things at pet stores, and no, i have never had this problem, but i know enough about cats. Maybe you are feeding your cat food tat is to soft! They try to contol thier teeth!

Lack of attention or vitamin deficiency are the main causes of feeding wood by the cats.

Keep another cat of same age to play among themselves.

As bottom line, consult with your veterinarian to investigate possible medical causes for any behavior problems.

She might be having a problem with her teeth.. I might go take her to get them looked at.. That was my first though with the chewing on things.. That way you can rule out health issue..
but it could be the noise too if so.. find some toys that make noise for her.. even ball up a peice of news paper for her..

I would try spraying her with a tiny bit of water as a type of punishment when she does that or spraying the stuff she likes to chew on with an apple sour type spray that you can often find at places like Petsmart. As for why she's doing it, it could be she is board, that her teeth hurt, or simply because she likes it like you said, however if she keeps doing it I would suggest taking her to the vet to have her teeth checked out to be sure they arent bothering her. You might also want to get her toys that have a similiar texture but arent harmful to her or annoying to you.

To solve the debate - the sucking is a sign of the cat being taken away to early, the kneading is a trait that almost all cats have and will have. It is very much a comfort thing, it means he has adopted you as "mom" just as you adopted him. Be happy, you are the most special thing in the world to him. Just a tip, my cat does this too - I would suggest going to petsmart/petco and getting soft claws... they really do work and they eliminate the digging into your skin during the kneading/nursing

Some of my kitties do this too. Try finding some cat toys that might make a similar sound, try a variety and she should find one particular one that she likes the most and play with that.

a spray bottle of water or a can of compressed air helps to break most cats bad habits. whenever you see her chewing on something spray her. if she doesn't quit chewing after a couple weeks you may want to ask your vet for advice.
Good Luck!

Try and keep things away from her. When you catch her doing it, spray her with a spray bottle of water. And if she continues, ask a vet for some advice.
