i think its stupid. i mean poppies ARE red and as you said, grew all over the battle fields after the war. its like people have forgotten what they are suppose to be remembering. its rememberance of lives lost not yet another day to remember religion!!

Poppies are red in nature, but I'm sure that someone genetically modified one to be white!
More importantly the red in the poppy signifies the blood that was needlessly spilt on the battle fields, not snow at Christmas or something!. Poppies also really like to grow in disturbed soil, so after both World Wars battlefields where often teaming with vibrant red poppies in the following summer months.
White poppies signify nothing at all. Remembrance Day (Which is what the poppy appeal is sold for.) Is about Remembering those of ALL RELIGIONS who lost their lives in battle. Not just Christians. My Grand Father fought in India in WWII and a Sikh friend of his was shot dead as they both had a smoke together on patrol. Does this mean that I should only remember Christian Members of the British Army. All who faught in WWII should be remembered equally, or are they trying to differentiate between religious groups and devalue their contribution to a sad history!
I think its yet another idea from some pillock who has too much time on his or her hands and little grasp of history. They should get a life and go design some curtains or wallpaper!

I understand whilst it is considered that the red poppy is politically correct, there have been some grumblings from the Christian Church that the white poppy should replace the red as a symbolic gesture of Christianity.

The red poppy of Flanders field should always be the poppy of remembrance as far as I am concerned. And I'm sure that is the opinion of thousands if not millions of other people.

Do not let us desegregate the memory of those who gave their lives for us by even discussing this subject.

It is a great pity that those who thought up this idea, don't roll up their sleeves and go and help the less fortunate rather than trying to make a name for themselves.

I do! The Poppy is not a religious symbol and should not be treated as one. If anything we should keep it red to remind us how horrific war is and learn from the past. As I have been told, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it!

Will the money from the White Poppies still go to the Royal British Legion?

It's good to see so much discussion of this though, it shows people do actually care about our veterans.

They should without a doubt stay red, poppies grew over the fields where soldiers were dying i believe.

I think the red stood for the blood that was spilt.

It is a mark of respect for those who gave their lives so that we would live free.

It has not got anything to do with religion anyway.

Just more "DO GOODERS" TYRING TO GET RID OF OUR TRADITIONS THROUGH THE BACK DOOR I SAY??

Just answered a very similar question a few mins ago! It's a good one though! I think it's very silly. We have always worn red poppies and do so out of respect for the brave men who fought in the battlefields. If we are paying our respects (whilst giving money to charity), isn't that the main thing? The church should address the problems that are right under their noses rather than waste their (and our) time with pettiness!

Poppy seeds have some opium in them. Sesame seeds do not have any. Poppy seeds can be seen on a drup test, but they are below the reporting threshold and will not cause a positive test. The are both small and crunchy. Eat all the sesame seeds you want and they will cause a positive drug test.

I agree with you, it is stupid to try and sell these "Peace Poppies." In my opinion, it is just another way for someone to try and make a buck. I do not doubt that there will be people buying those poppies, and those will be the gullible people who buy things becuse they are told something that they just have to believe. Religion sucks!

They should stay red. From what I remember reading, the red of the poppie also represents all the blood that was shed and the lives lost in the wars.
