Ok, here's the thing...I like to have a half bottle of red wine about 4 nights a week (sometimes 5 or 6)...after work to relax and de-stress. But, I make a point to go at least one night without alcohol (and often more than that). Is this a concern mentally or physically for me?

Not long ago I experimented by going 30 days without alcohol. I did feel better, but also missed it. I really enjoy the taste with my dinner...and after...and i admit the buzz is nice. But I don't think questioning this automatically makes me an alkie. But, yes there is concern of going in that direction...thanks for the answers.

I drink 1/2 bottle to 1 bottle per night. I'm a 26 year old male in super health. Wine (notably red) has certain antioxidant properties that are purportedly beneficial not only to the circulatory system, but also to various other areas impacting both short and long-term health. I think that a person's safe alcohol consumption largely depends on physical and psychological interaction with alcohol, health status, and ability to temper alcohol use with ordinary responsibilities. If you are drinking amounts of wine that make you feel uncomfortable, then truly evaluate the above factors and decide if your wine consumption has a negative impact on any of the above. If there is a negative impact, then your consumption should be decreased (in my opinion complete cessation is unnecessary unless moderated consumption cannot be achieved.) If there is no negative impact on the above factors, then drink up and enjoy a great natural treat!

I would say how long you are spanning those 1/2 bottles.
In any case, your liver can only handle so much so maybe 1/2 a glass or so every other day but if you are getting 'tipsy' to 'hammered' then you are having too much.
I say tipsy is too much only because you are having it 4-5 times a week.
Secondly, I shall say that if you dread the night that you can't drink red wine only because you dont want to be labelled an addict...is a sign of alcoholism. I cant tell you how many nights you should go not drinking but its the attitude that should be addressed: that is, "ok, im not having red wine. Am I able to find other ways to destress myself?"

I've heard it said that the advice of drinking a 4oz glass of wine everyday to maintain a healthy heart is not really accurate and that a person should drink a 4oz glass of wine 2-3 times a month. However, every-body's body is so different that general advice such as this should be taken with consideration as to your own body's unique chemistry in mind.
Although the amount that you are drinking seems excessive to me, you may be tolerating that amount just fine. I have a very sensitive body and a half of bottle of wine a night would kill me (really!).
However, that fact you are questioning the healthiness of your wine consumption indicates that you concerned yourself. Try cutting back and see if you can achieve relaxation with just one glass of wine a night? You may find that simply the ritual of selecting a wine to drink, opening the bottle, pouring it and then savoring the flavor is enough to have therapeutic effects and unwind your mind.
You may also want to explore new relaxation techniques that would have more positive health benefits: meditating, exercise, walking, reading, painting, swimming, etc. You might find you can do without the Merlot more often than you think!
Best of luck to you!

A glass of red wine with dinner or if the two of you share a bottle once n a while is perfectly normal but to have a bottle to a bottle and a half a night and the inability to cut back is a huge problem. I am sorry to hear about this and to tell you what you already know btw. He is an alchy and is going to get much worse if he continues on this path... i would have a serious talk with him about it but if it doesnt change, i would leave.

I dont consider myself an alcoholic and when I used to hear friends say they drank a bottle of wine last night I used to think maybe they have a problem but now that I can appreciate wine I find myself having on the average 5-6 glasses a week and sometimes that might be all in one night and none the other nights. I think your okay.

A glass of wine per day has been proven to be beneficial for your health. You lose some of the beneficial effects with every extra glass and with half a bottle you probably even out.
It is also true that worrying about your drinking habits is a sign of an alcohol problem, I am afraid.
I think you had better talk to your doctor about your concern asap.

If you want to be HEALTHY about it, look at the two countries in the WORLD who love RED WINE! FRANCE and ITALY!
These people drink their red wine in a healthy way (mostly) by having their wine TOGETHER WITH THEIR MEALS!!!
Very important. If you are going to drink wine, have it with a meal!
I am a NON-Drinker, but have many friends that enjoy wine. The healthiest of these are those who have their wine together with their meals. I only have a couple of friends who drink outside of their meal times, and they are the ones with OTHER PROBLEMS. It becomes a problem to control, if YOU DON*T CONTROL IT YOURSELF. I say the easiest and SAFEST way to enjoy your wine is like the French and the Italians and drink it with your meals.
One other item of safety: The French are some of the MOST DANGEROUS drivers in the WORLD. Because they drink and drive. More people lose their lives in France on the roads due to drinking and driving...Not much better in Italy. But for those who enjoy their wine with their meals, they DO JUST FINE!!!

Yes. I have to tell you the truth. Only people who have a drinking problem would question their drinking. You don't have to be a bum to be an alcoholic. So, stop drinking. Period. No wine, no nothing. See how you react. If you can't fathom quitting, if you find that you are thinking about it all the time, feel that you need it because of something going on in your life..........then you are an alcoholic. Even if you "make it a point" to not drink for one night....I bet you think about it that whole night.....right?

I'm not sure about the physical effects, as that depends on a number of factors including your heredity. But as far as the mental effects, drinking that much alcohol alone on regular basis is not a good thing. Stop doing it or seek help if you can't stop. Peace out.
