From birth I have mother tongue English. As a 30+ adult I found out about Esperanto. I have learned and become fluent in Esperanto. I also try to speak hindi with some of my relatives and friends for whom Hindi is their first language.

Because of Esperanto I feel I get insight into how English works and functions. I know what a verb is. A noun. An adjective.

I do realise that many words used in Esperanto have been lifted from French and more than a few come from German. I feel that Italian is very close in terms of sound.
The spirit of Esperanto is great. It aims to be a language for peace and friendship.

Yes, I speak Esperanto. English is my first language (actually Texan, but I learned English in school ;-) I began learning Esperanto in 2000 and now use it daily via the internet. Learning and using Esperanto has always been voluntary so the number of speakers tend to rise and fall, but it is on the rise again via the internet. There's no such thing as a language that takes no effort to learn, so like any other language, I had disappointments and frustrations while learning Esperanto, but it is not as difficult to learn as any of the "natural" languages (since learning Esperanto I've also learned Spanish, and German, and studied Polish and Mandarin Chinese) and it is well worth the effort. I've spent much more time on each of the other languages than I spent on Esperanto, but I am still a beginner in them, while I'm fluent in Esperanto.

Some people say that "being an artificial language, Esperanto MUST sound artificial". But people who say such things haven't really tried it, it doesn't sound or feel artificial. Since the creator of the language made up nothing, but took everything in the language from other European languages, it feels and sounds perfectly natural. It sounds very much like Italian, with words thrown in from German, English, Spanish, French, Polish, Russian, Yidish and Greek, but completely regular so it all fits together nicely.

Try it, you'll have fun. After just a few lessons you'll be able to use the language (although keep working on it, you'll learn to have much more interesting conversations), and you can use Esperanto to talk to people from all over the world.

You can also use Esperanto to travel the world and meet people face-to-face. Check out the Pasporta Servo (Esperanto for "Passport Service"). It's a world-wide guest service, a published pocket book of contact information for Esperantists who will invite you into their homes just for the pleasure of your company and the experience of speaking Esperanto with you. http://www.tejo.org/ps/ The web page and the book, however, are only available in Esperanto, because the Pasporta Servo is only available to those who speak the language.

No it wasn't my first language I learned, I'm Mexican then I speak Spanish as my mother language, I learned also English at very young age .

I started learning Esperanto a couple of years ago, since I master English I still don't feel very comfortable with my Esperanto level, but I try everyday to practice it either reading, hearing or even speaking.

I'm trying to teach Esperanto to my kids at home and my wife so we can become an Esperantis family

I can speak Esperanto, but not that much, I started to learn it but after a couple of lessons (it was a free internet course) I stopped learning because I wanted to learn Russian... But I think I'm going to start again with it, because learning Russian from a book isn't very easy, and Esperanto is artificial, so no exceptions etc : )
It's not my first language, but some persons learn their children Esperanto, so there are people with Esperanto as first language.

I speak a little Esperanto as I am still learning. I started about two years ago but have been slow at it thanks to my busy life.

I can write the language pretty well but speaking it is my problem.

It is not my Mother language (English is) and only found out about it a few years ago.

I will teach it to my children (one day) as a first language.

We will never have peace if we can't talk to each other. For those people that think English should be/ is the international language are wrong. It will never work anymore than another country telling "us" that their language should be the international language.

Mi parolis Esperanton (I used to speak Esperanto). I learned it 13 years ago, but I stopped 10 years ago because I lost interest in it.

Most Esperanto speakers are those who learned it when they were older. Though there are a few hundred - if not thousand - cases of children who speak it as a native language because both their parents spoke it to them.

I speak Esperanto. I started learning it about 10 months ago. I'm not fluent in it yet, but I'm getting there. It's a great language, try it.

I not only speak it, but I also teach it in an afterschool club of a public school in San Diego. The name of the club is "La Verda Stelo."

I started learning it less than two years ago by doing the 10-lesson course weeks online. It took me 10 weeks to finish it.

As a professional translator, I also use it at work. Sometimes it's hard to find someone that is fluent is particular language pair, like Swahili and Tagalog, for example, so I find an esperantist whose native language is Swahili, and Tagalog-speaking Esperantist and we use Esperanto as the bridge language!

The last one we did involved a step-by-step description of a complicated surgical procedure. Esperanto worked beautifully! (and allows me to accept translation jobs that other translators have to turn down, so my wallet is happy too!)
