I have to agree to try the restaurant inside the museum.
Outside the museum....if you walk west on 79th/80th/81st Streets two avenues over will be Amsterdam Avenue.
On Amsterdam between 79th & 80th - there is a small Mexican restuarant called the Great Burrito. It does not look very fancy, but believe me, the food is incredible!
If you want someplace a little fancier, right across the street is Nice Matin, and that is a nicer place for dinner.
If you walk uptown on Amsterdam, there are lots of good restaurants to try. Everything from Italian to Sushi to Brother Jimmy's BBQ. You might want to just walk and look at a few of the menus and see what you like.
Also, there is a really cute place called "Good Enough to Eat" on Amsterdam and 83rd that is small and usually crowded for brunch, but has great meals the rest of the day. I highly recommend it.
