Botany is the scientific study of plants and their environment. It includes genetics, biochemistry, physiology, anatomy at a gross (large) level as well as at a tissue and cellular level (microscopic) and includes intracellular things such as chloroplasts and other specialised cell contents.

Botany also deals with plants in their environment e.g. soils and the nutrients derived from the soil (minerals etc). Other aspects of plant growth and development are important in relation to light, temperature, water, humidity, salinity etc.

Botany may also include plant pests and diseases and the problems of poor soils. In addition, adaptations to specific conditions e.g. salt, drought are covered. Plants are useful to medicine as many medicinal chemicals are derived from plant leaves and other parts; likewise there are many poisons that are plant-based (e.g. some fungi).

The relationship between plants and animals e.g. for fertilisation (birds, bats, insects) and seed dispersal (birds, mammals) can be involved in botany too.

These small cacti are natives to Brazil. The species belonging to this group are cleistogamous, meaning that their flowers produce seed without even opening. F. castanea forms a spherical, flattened, olive-green to brownish stem only growing 11/4 inches across. It has 10 to 15, almost flat ribs that are centered with a row of close-set, downy areoles. The 7 to 11, tiny spines are reddish at first, eventually turning black. The sulphur-yellow flowers are 11/2 inches long and across and will only open in the hottest, brightest, afternoon sun, if at all. Those that do not open produce seeds through self-fertilization.
