I loved my pit bull. His name was Red and he was the best dog I've ever had. He was very protective, but never attacked anyone. I could leave him in my car unlocked with all of the windows down and everyone was always okay. He would follow me everywhere. I did notice that most people were afraid of him and I didn't even care that they were. I loved him and wish he were still alive with me today.
Pit bulls are not evil just because they're pit bulls. They can be the best, sweetest, most gentle dogs in the world.

these dogs are to loyal and fearless. see when the owner beats it the dog fights back. but the paper just says pit attacks owner.and when you beat your wife or kids and the dog bites you.the paper just says pit bull bites owner.or when you get into a fist fight with your neighbor and the dog bites him. the paper just says pit bites neighbor.and when the neighbor kid throws rocks and sticks at the dog in the fenced in yard-but it gets out the next day the paper says pit bites kids. i have raised pits for 46 years with 9 kids now 29-28-19- 17-16-15-14-11 and a 3year old.i have never had a pit bite a person.you know some people should not own a gun. no felons no nuts no minors and you need license or a class on guns.it should be the same with owning a dog over 20 pounds.where pits r banned rottys r the new problem. if you ban pits now what about tomorrow then dobs then shepards then all dogs over 20 pounds.blacks r 13% of the population in the usa but commit over 50% of all violent crimes should we ban blacks---well dont answer that. check into pit bites and see who there owners are.felons minors nuts and just look it up.

BSL completely breaks my heart. :[ There are so many wonderful pitties out there. Unfortunately, it only takes a few idiots to ruin it for this beautiful breed. My dog has never tried to bite me or anyone else. No matter what his breed, had he ever tried to bite me, he wouldn't be my dog anymore. An aggressive dog of ANY breed is dangerous.
Some of the answers people give about pit bulls are just infuriating. Someone else asked yesterday if they should get a pittie and everyone was all, "OMGZ THEY ARE TEH DEVIL!!!11!!" It makes me sick! The American Temperment Test Society annually tests over 120 breeds and the APBT had a passing rate of 83.5% which is just as good (if not better!) than most common household breeds. For example, the beagle scored 79.7%. On that note, there was actually a five year study done of the likelihood of 100 different breeds to bite. The pit bull was 5th...FROM THE BOTTOM. There are 95 breeds more likely to bite!
One more thing..
AVERAGE NUMBER OF AMERICANS KILLED EACH YEAR BY:
CIGARETTES: 440,000
AUTOMOBILES: 42,366
2ND HAND SMOKE: 35,000
GUNS: 29,338
PIT BULLS: 3
Which would YOU ban?
Anyone who is stupid enough not to educate themselves on what a wonderful breed the pit bull is, doesn't deserve the love that only a pittie can give. If you have one, you know the pittie love I'm talking about. :]

I am a pit bull owner would not trade the breed for anything. Yes, it is in the way you train and handle them. Just like people animals can be moody. The goverment views animals as a waste..meaning they have no conscenience when it comes to putting down an animal. However they will not put down a human for killing a another human. Instead they will "rehabilitate" them for 10 years and turn them loose again. They promote not to be racial towards other humans, but they promote being racial towards animals. People see only the devastation of what a pit can do, BUT THEY NEVER SEE WHAT TORTURE A PIT BULL HAS BEEN THRUOGH!! They never show you the pit that saved his owners life, or the pit that saved a drowning child. You can take the meanest pit and make a lover out of them!!!!

Its not always how they are raised, genetics also play a part. "Pitbulls" are so carelessy bred and overpopulated, on top of it being a gneric term to begin with, you end up with a wide array of dog types and temperments. People who say pitbulls snap without reason are foolish. Non-aggressive dogs do not go from fine to attack for no reason or without warning. Unfortunately though (due to poor bredding and people getting a difficult dog without experience) some pitbull type dogs are not trustworthy. This being said they exhibit dominant/fearful aggressive tendancies throughout their life and many times people arer not equipped with the knowledge or do not put the effort in to to correct these behaviors and you end up with a dangerous situation. Im sure you will have everyone on here telling you that "there pitbull is the sweetest and best dog ever" or that "pitbulls are born to kill and are the spawn of the devil". That fact of the matter is there are some really good dogs and some really bad ones (and this doesnt always have to do with how they are raised) but the majority are somewhere in the middle and if cared for and raised properly you will not have a dangerous dog. I do think however that there is a "pitbull problem" in the US; extreme fear, terrible treatment, over population, careless breeding, widespread myths, etc. I do not however feel that banning a so called breed, when really its just a generic term, is the answer. I think pet ownership/responsibility laws in gerneal need to be over-hauled. To answer your question simply though...there are untrustworthy "pitbulls" regardless of how they are raised, its just not the majority. I can say this with confidence seeing the whole spectrum after spending ten last ten years in animal shelters. Pitbulls were never my favorite dog and still aren't but my dog is also a "pitbull" and no, she is not perfect but she's a really good dog and shes not going to turn into Cujo and she sat at the shelter for over two months without getting so much as a glance so I caved and shes been with me for the last six years and ive had no issues (except for the looks/stupid comments from people and renting is always fun).

I have been around pit bulls my whole life and not one has ever been aggressive. The pit bulls were once used for fighting so i think that's why people believe they are aggressive but not if you have the right owner. They will not just suddenly attack, snap,or bite without warning. They are naturally gentle. If the pit bull was raised with children and are very close to the family and something threatens them, they are naturally protectors. My nephews were wrestling and my sisters pit bull grabbed my nephew by the bibs and pulled them apart. So they are very smart. Now get a Rottweiler/ pit bull and your looking at an aggressive dog.

I totally agree. If there is ever a problem with a Pitbull, people should point fingers at the owner. The thing is with the Pitbull is that they are very strong...so a strong animal with an unknowing or idiot owner means trouble. The owner is the problem.
It will usually mean that the owner is not dominant and has let the pitbull become dominant. This can happen with all dogs.

I have a one year old female pitbull. She is a big girl people get scared because of her size, but never ever has she biten or even growled at someone. She might bark if she see someone coming into the yard, but thats about it. It really is on how you raise your puppy. I have treated her as if she was my own child. She loves to play with people and give people "kisses" The only problem I have with her is that shes completely spoiled and thinks that everyone should play with her. She doesn't play rough or anything like that. If you like to go on walks or anything like that, they are the perfect dog to have! They have a ton of energy. I think banning pitbulls is completely stupid. Think if a chihuahua was the size of a pitbull. They are ALOT meaner than any pitbull I have ever seen...

Any dog can be trained to bring out its best or worst traits, as can children. Some are inherent, but a responsible owner is aware of this and works with the challenges.
What needs to be banned is not the breed, but the criminal behavior of over-breeding, mistreating, using dogs for gambling and fighting.
It is the human behaviors that need to be regulated, then the dog behaviors will fall into place.
And, yes, there are some dangerous dog of all breeds, who unfortunately need to be confined or euthanized because they are not suitable to live around people or animals. But they are not all or primarily Pit Bulls.

My husband and I own an APBT. We have raised him from a puppy and provided a loving home for him. He has NEVER bitten us or anyone else. I feel very safe when it is just me and him at home. He loves to snuggle and listens to us very well. He is smart and catches on quickly. I don't care to own any other breed except for a APBT. The pit bull ban is very upsetting to me. It makes as much since as this-well since so may people have been killed by drunk drives no one can ever use a car again. HELLO-why in the hell make everyone pay for a few people's wrongdoing?! Those that own and love APBT need to take a stand. Go to thepetitionsite.com, then browse petions at the top of the page, look for animal welfare. There is alot to go through so maybe at the top of the page you could just type in pit bull or BSL. Sign all the ones about states wanting to have a pit bull ban(you would be signing againist the ban). Educate people about the positive things regarding pit bulls. If you really want people to know the true temperment of an APBT have them watch this movie in its entirety http://gprime.net/flash.php/thepitbullproblem.
