As an atheist, all I have is this short life. So I try to make a difference, even if it's small, without hope of "reward" from god now or in the afterlife. This is "good."
Silly things like: cash a check for a stranger in the grocery store, volunteer every week, find lonely people and invite them over for holidays, give rides to hitchhikers when its raining, give money to good causes, have internatnional students stay with us whenever possible. Etc.
I behave ethically. I do not lie, I never steal. I treat everything with kindness and thoughtfulness in my actions.
Do all humans strive to be good? I think most do.
Why not? Because some have been very damaged psychologically.

This is a very difficult question to answer. We know in advance that many people strive to be evil (One only has to listen to the news or read the papers). If all the good one's in the world however really strive, then why does it take so long to find out about the evil one's and consequently do something about it, before it is too late. (i.e. first selling them arms and technology and then be surprised when they turn on you or in other words, first earn a fortune on them.."legit business" then...as I said before)
I think basically the root to all evil, apart from religion, is money and power.
If all humans strived to be good, then the world would be a better place. The problem is the ratrace, not all for one and one for all (this never existed anyway), but one for oneself and dearest and look away from the negative things in life to be able to exist in their own little worlds. This is also not entirely their fault, much more that of politics, society and the demographical developement!
There are other factors too, to underscore the fact that not all humans strive to be good, these being
- rising crime
- high divorce rates
- corruption
- prostitution
- greed
- etc. etc. etc.....
Good question though, got me thinking. And yes, btw, I do think I am a good person, because I am me, open, honest and I do not hurt anyone!
Good luck, with your quest!

Yes, I do believe I'm a good person. I'm generous to my fellow man, I care for my family and community, I help others when possible, I try not to judge others (that's the hardest part). I let others go in front of me at the grocery store and I let people pull out from the school parking lot during the morning rush. I watch my neighbors kids when she needs me to and I give generously to many causes. I do volunteer work at a local shelter and I often help at my son's school. I try not to hurt people, but when I do, I apologize and try to make amends.
I teach my son that everyone on this earth is the same, regardless of religious beliefs, political beliefs, wealth or anything else. We all have to wipe our butts when we go poo.
I wish all human's strived to be "good" but that such a bland way to describing people. What is "good"? Everyone would have a different definition. As long as I can go to sleep each night with a clear conscience, I'm okay with myself.

Borg pet I am a good person, not because of any deed I have performed for others, but because I always try to consider that there is more than one way, other than my way. I strive to be good and as being a flawed human that I am I sometimes do not carry through. I know that it is not about just being good, but more so the balance of things that keeps you humble and at peace with yourself, which is good. I wish you well my borg pet and I would like your opinion on my last question, that we are all going to hell..

Tough one. One the one hand, I prefer to treat people with kindness, respect, and compassion,a nd I care about how other people feel and what affects them.
... but there are times when it's necessary to get mean when people (at work, family, etc) try to bully me (I have a quiet disposition so often people think they can). Also I have to be mean to my toddler son to teach him rules and manners or he'll grow up to be a little tyrant.
Also I intentionally deviate from things I'm 'supposed' to do, for my sanity's sake. Like taking a day off of work and not telling my daycare so I can have a few hours all to myself. I LIKE being bad in this way. I do it because there is no other way I will get that kind of time for myself. It makes me feel so much better when life gets tough. Yeah yeah I'm a selfish bastard... but a happy one.
I'd rather be happy than right.

I can't speak for the mentally insane people of the world that commit murder and rape, but as for the people I surround myself with, yes, I feel that we strive to be good.
I, myself, feel that I am a very good person. I work hard, raise my daughter to be caring and open-minded, play with my dog, love my husband, treat my friends and family with love and respect...I think "good" means that you live your life to the fullest, following laws, treating people with respect, and not hurting others.
I also feel that a "good" person realizes that everyone makes mistakes, including themselves, and tries to make things right. They are also open-minded to other people, regardless of what they believe or how they live their life. Good people don't judge, regardless of what they were brought up to believe is right and wrong. Good people respect everyone.

"Good" is always derive from the purity of one's heart, if the heart is good, everything will be good. In order to have the purest heart one must have total control over one's "desire". This is where the
religion will play an important role to safe guard the desire to the right path.

Yes. I live my life trying to help others, and trying to never intentionally hurt anyone. I think that makes me a good person.

Only GOD is GOOD.
We can only strive to be 'better' people.
I'm not 'great', but at least, I'm better than I WAS!!!
