There is and always (since 1954) been 1 Vietnam. It was temporarily divided by the Geneva accord, but free elections were to be held in both sections and the country was to be reunited. The north held theirs and the Viet Mingh (Socialist) party won. That party was also very popular in the south. The dictators in the south refused to call free elections and appealed to the US for aid. The Viet Cong, the military arm of the Viet Mingh attempted to force elections in the south. A CIVIL WAR ensued and the US backed the South's ditators. That is why the US troops complained about not knowing who were the enemy and who were friends among the civilians. Ultimately, the people won, overthrowing the corrupt dictitorial gov't and the US was forced to beat a hasty retreat. It wasn't a victory for the North Vietnamese, but for the Vietnamese people. Sort of like when the US drove out the Brits., it was avictory for the American people.

Nobody won the Vietnam war. The Americans decided to pack up and leave it up to the RVN to win. These were our S.Vietnamese allies who we were protecting for the previous fifteen years.
Once the American forces were out, the S.Nietnamese quickly capitulated. I would expect the same thing to happen in Iraq, if we ever left them with their own devices, to beat the insurgents.
Understand one thing about the war in Vietnam. The US military was asked to fight with one political arm tied behind it's back. If the US were determined to, it could make a parking lot out of Vietnam, in one day. It's not so inclined!
At the rate Vietnam is growing and prospering with the help of the US, we could actually become friends. Although Vietnam is a communist country, it's certainly is not in the sense that N.Korea is, because it isn't the hard core isolationalist that N.Korea is.

The North Vietnamese. Militarily the USA could not win the war. President Johnson lacked the moral courage to pull the US troops out and accept failure when it was obvious the US could not win without a major escalation of the war.
I do not think war now is likely because the Vietnamese needs the US to boost their economy. US businesses need the cheap Vietnamese labor. So in the end everybody won except the dead.

The UK. It kept out of it although the USA was insisting they had to tag along. By way of appreciation the US stopped supporting the pound on the international money markets triggering a decade long economic depression in the UK. Call it a moral victory.

If it was lost, it was not because of the troops, but Nixon! Nixon withdrew our troops!
The US Military never lost a major battle in Vietnam, including Tet!
