Your values, b/c if you don't want to have sex before marriage and he does, that's gonna cause a huge problem down the road. Also, honesty. If he's a known liar, how can you ever trust him. Humor is also important b/c if you don't have a sense of humor, you'll get bent out of shape at the silliest of things. Just being able to have someone to laugh with will solve a multitude of problems. Also, communication. Being able to communicate will make it easier for you two to get to know one another and share a special bond that no one can break.

Communication styles, morals, values, hopes, dreams, etc...

Now this does not mean 2 people have to be exact copies of each other, just have a commonality of purpose.

If she talks non-stop about every topic and he never says boo, could be a problem. If she talks only about celebrities and TV shows, and he talks only about nuclear physics, could be a problem.

If he wants to retire to a fishing cabin on the lake and she hates fishing and is deathly afraid of water, could be a problem.

Get the idea?

I've found that I cannot have a relationship with someone unless they share my sense of humor. Trust, honesty, values, and some common interests also help. It really all depends on who you are, and what you value the most in another person.

Having a similar sense of humor is important. There's nothing more awkward than listening to your date/BF/husband yuk it up over something you find inane or offensive. Or you laughing as they stare blankly at you.

The most important thing, I think, is that the two of you feel good when you're together.

Way of thinking: it's not just some hobbies/interest that you share that help, it's also the way you think: do you agree on most things, think the same way when it comes to life/situations. It's important to see eye to eye.

A similar approach to handling money has to be at the top of the list. A similar approach to religion is close behind.
