Since you most likely have an upgrade version, you will need an older version to upgrade from. I have a feeling if you format and do a new install you will get stuck if you do not have access to an older version of windows. You can use an old windows 95 disc if you have one.

When you install windows on a newly formatted hard drive, during the install process it will ask you for proof of a previous version. If you do not have proof, then you can not install it.

In this situation you might want to format your hard drive before you install anyways because you don't know if there were any rootkits (viruses) in the system that was installed before. Save your documents, Outlook settings and format the hard drive or rather let Windows installation process rearrange your partitions and then format.

Good luck!

If the PC already has XP on it then which version is it? Home or Pro?
If its Pro then you cannot DOWNGRADE your OS to Home.
If its Home then it will only show you additional features you can install. If you want to remove the "pirated" version you either need to reactivate with your cert key or completly reformat your PC and install the OS from scratch.

Also note if the previous OS was Win2k ONLY WinXP Pro can be used to upgrade.
