I wouldn't bother with the ants, 'cos he'd probably just go and hire an aardvark for the day. That said, i know your nephew and at 43, he should be able to do what he likes. Even if it is grand theft auto.

I don't know where you would buy ants from except maybe a shop which sells exotic pets like lizards or something where they sell ants as food.
Why don't you take the fuse out of the plug to his video game machine sometime, make out you have no idea what's wrong with it and then suggest the ant farm/scuba diving/hang gliding/paint balling or whatever? Lazer places and paint balling is like being in a real life computer game, isn't it? Well, a bit anyway.

I don't think an ant farm is much of a distraction :(
Has he read Harry Potter? He might enjoy it.
If you are round visiting, his mother should get him to come out of his room and be polite and eat cakes with the grown-ups.
You could ask if you could join in in a two player game.

My grandson has the same problem. My son HAS to take the controllers away from him twice a week so family time can come together. He does'nt get them til home work is done and they are taken away at bedtime. This was tough at first , then the boy realized this was the only way he was getting his game. Try that. He does;nt get up in the middle of the nite any more to play videos!!

You have to take charge. No playing video games on school nights. First of all you need to sit him down, and say we need to talk, not only to him but everyone in the house, School nights no video games. Homework, is first and foremost. then comes the chores. Weekends school projects comes first. then you can play video games, also weekend chores. join him up for some activities after school. boy scouts are a good start. This will work, but you have to be firm, and tell him you love him, and what you are doing is for his best interest!

I think it's time to remove the video games or at least put limitatins on how long he plays. He's gotta get out of the house if only for a little while.

Try to persuade him to go with you and a group for a walk. Try a forest or along a rocky coastline. Have a picnic/barbecue and if safe and possible enjoy a twilight fire. Hopefully there will be stars present and he will see the joys of nature.

Do it up right and go out and find some fire ants. That should keep both of you on your toes for awhile.

just leave him to it...he's not getting into trouble while he's at home...maybe he does not like ants.....invite him to your place one weekend and take him bowling or swimming or some place where theres things happening for kids of his ge...surely it's not healthy for a kid to be cooped up in a room 24/7...if he refuses your offer...just leave him, he's not bothered...
