After seeing a few answers.... either there are alot of people on here from america who just dont get what we call being ironic.... or there are some very sad people who take life to serious lol

If someone close to me vanished without a trace, by me not seeing or hearing from them would basically be enough to understand that they are missing. Regardless if they left a trace or not.

These are two differnt issues being addressed. Without a trace, from the French/Latin phrase "sans Traceur", or "unable to track", only refers to the person leaving no trackable clues as to their whereabouts.

'without a trace' means the kidnapper didn't leave any clues i think but you know they vanished because they wouldn't turn up to work and the boss would say "whats happened to old whats-his-face?" =D

But we use this expression without meaning it literally
