If someone close to me vanished without a trace, by me not seeing or hearing from them would basically be enough to understand that they are missing. Regardless if they left a trace or not.

These are two differnt issues being addressed. Without a trace, from the French/Latin phrase "sans Traceur", or "unable to track", only refers to the person leaving no trackable clues as to their whereabouts.

'without a trace' means the kidnapper didn't leave any clues i think but you know they vanished because they wouldn't turn up to work and the boss would say "whats happened to old whats-his-face?" =D
