We have a family plot with the family name at the head of the graves. We purchased a foot marker for my daddy and then the VA sent us another marker 5 1/2 x 8 1/2. Where do I place the VA marker? There is not room on the present foot stone to attach the VA marker to it. HELP!!!

we have 5 spots....at the head and in the center is the family name....my daddy's foot marker is at his feet and matches the markers at the feet of my grandparents. A spot has been left for my mother and then there is an extra one on the side. All the markers are gray granite and the VA one is bronze being mounted on 4" gray granite. My mother wants to put the VA marker at Daddy's head. do these details help you answer my questions better?

1.decide which marker you prefer for the actual gravesite and take out the one which doesn't get the vote. too many markers just won't do your grave well.
2.you can always opt to put the VA marker (for example as a decorative memorial at your home.
3.there may be others who may be interested in buying the "not-to-be-used" marker. better to sell than throw away.

Hello,
Please provide more information on foot marker(s), VA marker, family stone, individual grave markers.
Do you have a single stone with the family name?
Do you have individual markers which identify each deceased member? Does your daddy have an individual head stone and what is its shape?
Does your daddy have only one foot stone and is it placed at his feet? What material is it? Stone or metal? Size?
Is the VA marker metal or stone? Thickness of VA marker?
Note: I rebuild cemeteries and restore grave markers. Your question is important and perhaps I can help.

Use whichever you feel is the nicer and more appropriate for your father's life and personality. My guess is... that's the one that your family purchased, which was made with him in mind, regardless of its style.

If by chance your father was very proud and gung-ho about his military service, and talked about it frequently, the VA marker might be the right one to use, even though it may not be the most attractive.

Don't forget the VA marker can always be used somewhere in the family home, where I'm sure there are photos of your father in his uniform, home on leave, getting married, etc.

Good luck with the decision.

You can always remove the foot marker and add the one the VA sent. Save or have the other on place on another grave or sell it after it has been professionally sanded down to remove a name that may have been placed on it. Waste not want not.
