Rest assured its not the switch on the side of your transmission, that is a nueteral safety switch and only effects the starting of the vehicle. the second option is your torque convert real easy way to test that is raised the back of the vehicle so the tires are not on the ground and then place it in drive, but ake sure your front wheels are chalked very well ans you are in a safe area. if the vehicle goes into drive and the tires instantly move with the rate of the motor then its your tc. the other possibility is your air idle control valve. the way to test that is to just simply rev up you vehicle it park if thier are no sputters or hesitation it is fine.

No its called your IAC (idle air control) valve and it needs to be replaced!!!!!!!! Basically the fan inside the part (IAC) is clogged and can't regulate the right amount of air entering your car at idle RPMs and the car shuts off from not getting the right amount oxygen/gas mixture in the engine.

Since you replaced the alternator I think it may be the torque converter because my mustang done that same thing (except it's 5 speed) but it was my alternator.
