We are very short staffed and I want to be able to take a vacation day (which I have accrued) at a time we are not swamped. So I need some last minute excuses I can use the night before or in the morning I am taking off.

You say you are willing to wait until "we are not swamped" so why would you need an "excuse"?

If it is actually that hard to get time off, just tell your supervisor that you have been unusually stressed lately and you need to have a day to just get away and calm down. Ask about a week ahead of time so it doesn't come as surprise to your sup.
If your sup is decent he/she will realize you are being thoughtful and responsible by asking ahead of time and should honor that.
At least you will have the knowledge that you were honest.

A sup who isn't responsive to the needs of the workers will soon find they have a hostile working class to deal with and that will come back to bite in the ****.

Where I worked, we had one boss who thought he had to act like a dictator to control everyone. When he finally PO'd everyone to the point they hated him we started watching for ways to get rid of him. Eventually the attendance and work output showed on paper that he wasn't getting the job done and they moved him to another area. A friend and I had a talk with him before he was moved and we did our best to make him realize he caused all of the problems in our area. He didn't listen. He acted the same in the new area and the people there were a lot meaner than us. They sabotaged everything he did and made his bosses know why things went downhill in their area. The company sent him to some training school to readjust his technique and then transferred him to a different facility where no one knew him. We heard the people there slashed the tires on his car!! After that I don't know what happened. I don't condone the slashing but I do understand the frustration of an unreasonable boss. They are actually counter productive.

Good luck and remember, honesty always pays good dividends...

i know lot's of people who have simply said they need a "mental health day" (a day to relax so they don't get too stressed)
or here's some other excuses:
you have a relative/friend in town
you have a minor household emergency
sick pet
......or simply call and say you won't be in, don't give an excuse..."i won't be in today...see ya monday"

Bereft. Someone in your immediate family passed overnight. It could be your Uncle Francis. You know, the one who lives in Newport News, Va. "-)
