You *can* be a godparent if you are not a Baptized Christian, but - you must promise (take a vow) that you will see to it that the godchild is raised as a Christian. I personally don't like to have godparents named who are not of the Christian Faith - but - there is nothing that says that those who serve as godparents have to be Baptized and practicing Christians. It just seems to be a better choice if they ARE.

Of course you can get your child Baptized. All you need to do is to go to church and ask.

The role of Godparents, is simply to take care of the child if something were to happen to the child's Parents. I would advise against getting your child baptized. The bible never mentions of children being baptized. In every situation it is only adults or in one case a young man. Small children or babies do not understand or grasp the decision that is being made for them. It is their decision to do so when they become aware of it's meaning.

It depends upon your religion. Some will not allow this, other religions won't even ask whether the god-parents to be are religious.
How about letting the child grow up and decide whether or not he/she wants to join the church?

I as an atheist am a godfather to two children, however that is in the secular sense that I am the adult that these children would come to if they needed to speak to an adult other than their parents. In most churches you would have to give a vow that you would help to bring them up in the Christian faith if you were present at the baptism, you could always cross your fingers...

Of course you can. It is the choice of your godchild's parents who they want to act as guardian in the event of their death - that's what it means to be a godmother or godfather.
