I have dark brownish hair. I bought Revlon Light Ash Blonde and used it last nite. I have super thick hair and I know I need to leave hair color products in longer than the directions say. It said to leave the color in for 45 minutes, so I left it in for 1 hour and now my hair is orange!! I'm almost in tears! I hate the way I lok to begin with, now I feel even uglier. How soon can I redye it? I'm a single mom with 2 kids and I can't afford a stylist to fix it. And should I look for something with a higher peroxide level or something?? If anyone knows I'd be soooo thankful!! :(

OOPS!

Common mistake so don't panic. Because your hair is dark it means that it contains a high amount of melanin (the red tones) and these take the longest to lift.

Realistically, you should have used a pre-lightener before dying it with the ash blonde tint, this would have removed the red tones - and because you haven't pre-lightened, the dye you have used has only lifted your hair to the maximum it can - thus leaving some of the red tones in, which is why you now have orange hair!

You can either buy a pre lightener and lift the rest of the red tones out (be very careful, don't let your hair turn white as this means you have left it on too long and it will be at breaking point) and then finish off with another ash blonde tint (again, don't leave on too long!)

Or....

You can dye your hair back dark again (possibly the easier option!) You will need to put the red tones back in first (a red dye will be fine) and then dye it back brown (it's important to put the red tones back in first or you'll end up with an uneven khaki colour)

The important thing is not to panic, in my opinion I think you'd be better off dying it back dark as this is the simpler of the two options that you can do at home.

Good luck!

Hi...Im pretty sure all dyes stop working after the alotted time anyway, so I dont think the length of time had anything to do with it. Ash blondes are very icky...lol...they tend to turn hair greenish so at least that didnt happen. As for how long between colorings, I have done up to 3 in one day and I have very thin hair. blondes tend to turn hair orange a lot, if I were you I would go with a dark blonde or a light brown next. I am not an expert, just know from experimenting :) and I am sure u are not ugly at all. good luck.

Alright this is whats going on I'm a hairdresser. Color is not going to lift color that's why your orange box colors can only get you so light if you have dark hair. You can color it now but you should go to a beauty supply store and get loreal preference. Its hard to say cause I cant see it so I'm not sure how even it is or if you can get blonde from what you have but anything darker you can do it and it will work and you can color it right away to fix it. IF you want blonde let someone in the beauty store help you alot of those girls are in beauty school I don't want to say a definite yes on blonde

just try dying it again. It's hard to go from a dark color to a light color like that and because you left in on for so long the dye started to alter. I use Revlon and it's usually supposed to only stay on for 25 minutes....if you wanted to leave it in longer. i wouldn't keep it on for any more than 10 minutes. just try the dye again. maybe a couple shades darker blonde so it wont come out brighter than the color you wanted.\\GOOD LUCK!! i know how that sucks to have your hair a color you hate!

Follow the directions, that's what they are for. Give your hair a few days to rest. Get a gentle color product, like those that gradually color hair over time, and use it.
The orange might tone down a little. The chemicals in the color have damaged your hair and it will take time to repair.

For an immediate fix, get a temporary or semi-permanent dye in a darker color. It'll be less harsh on your hair than permanent dye. You should be able to get your hair back to something close to its original color.

If you're feeling brave......
If you want to go from dark brown to light blonde, you need to remove the color from your hair first. What worked best for me was going to Sally's Beauty Supply and getting a hair dye remover, and using that. Sally's also has a line of hair dyes that are specifically designed for people who want to go from dark hair to light hair. My fiancee has very dark hair, and used the "Vanilla Champagne" dye after using dye remover to lighten her hair. It didn't turn out as light as the sample, but it did turn out a pretty blonde.

Dyes at beauty supply stores are different from the kind at Walmart or CVS - you have to buy the developer separately. Just read the directions on the box of dye to find out what kind of developer you need.

dark browns have a redish or copper base color.....soo when u go to dye your hair lighter it comes out orange.....dye your hair light ash brown and that should tone down the orangy color....or any brown with the "ash" in it because those arnt red/copper based colors......u can redye it as soon as u get the other hair color but after that wait a lil while before u dye it again....make sure u also condition ur hair....i hope things work out for uuu!! :)

go to the store and get you color to turn your hair back to what it was before. You can color your hair, but I wouldn't reccomend trying to lighten it further...I know this because my daughter who had long dark brown hair was talked into "going blonde" by her then friends idiot mother, and my daughter came home with yellow gross hair....here I am on a school night trucking to walmart at 8:30pm, we live 15 miles from town, to get hair coloring.....I wasn't going to let her go to school like that, so we dyed her hair to the closest natural looking color, and it came out fine...You can get ammonia free, a bit more gentle on your hair since you've already damaged it, and for further info, on the box of Clairol, there is a phone number where you can directly ask someone. I am sure they have a web site where you can read questions and answers pertaining to that....Hint, the older you get, the lighter your hair, the older it makes you look!

What color were you going for???

The problem with take-home dyes is that you don't know what color its going to turn into, so you need to take it slowly. Going from one extremity to another is difficult. I would dye to dark brown again, and then slowly work your way up to light ash blonde. Be careful not to go too dark because your hair could go green.

Good luck!!!
