The early stages of pregancy are difficult to detect if you are not a professional. A veterinarian can do an ultrasound or listen for multiple heartbeats. They can also take a blood or urine sample to test for hormone levels.

As a pet owner, you will be able to tell as she is closer to her delivery date. Obviously her belly will be more swollen. Also, a soon-to-be mama cat is SUPER friendly and affectionate due to her increased homone levels. She will also begin "nesting". That is, she will seek a private, safe area and begin to prepare it as a comfortable place for the deliery and nursing of her kittens. She may also be anxious and nervous and pace a lot. You want to be sure to provide her with a safe and private area for her babies. The gestational period of a cat is about 63 days (approx. 2 months).

Kittens should remain with their mothers for 12 weeks. 8 weeks is the minimum, but 12 is best. Once mama has weaned her kittens you should have her spayed as soon as possible so she doesn't go into heat again. It's really best for her overall health and well-being. It's also best for controling the unwanted pet population. Good luck!

if a cat is pregnant you can't tell to start with but as she goes on, you will see her nipples get more prominent as the fur around them recedes. Then the belly gets bigger. Do not feel a cats tummy unless you know what you are doing as it is painful and dangerous for cats. If you don't want kittens, a vet will neuter a pregnant cat, and she will be fine. Dramatic but kinder than leeting her have kits you would not keep - and perhaps kinder for the kits too. As she is from a shelter - pregnancy is unlikey -if she has any symptoms go to the vet - it could be another health problem.

Unless you’re breeding your cat chances are you won’t know your cat is pregnant until she is well along in the gestation period. The mother doesn’t begin to bulge noticeably until a couple of weeks before delivery time. Here are a few signs and symptoms you may see if your cat is pregnant:

Nipples will begin to enlarge and become more soft and pink (this is the #1 sign)
Weight gain, especially around the mid-section
Increase in appetite, this usually occurs close to birth
Some cats may become more affectionate than usual
Cats may also exhibit morning sickness
Nesting activity begins

Well, if you think she is because she's gianing weight, then think again. But the way I found out my cat was expecting is she gained like 4 pounds in 1 month and at about 3 weeks you could see the kittens start to move in her tummy. Keep checking her by putting your hands on her rib cage area. This is normally where you will feel most of the movement. :o) Good Luck!

If you got the cat from a shelter and they claimed the cat had been fixed, it is extremely doubtful that the cat is pregnant. A swollen belly and enlarged nipples are two signs to look for. If she is showing some kind of symptoms, you should really have her checked by the vet.

Wait 2 months and see if it gets fat and pops out kittens.
Otherwise take it to the vet.
