Try a balled up piece of paper. It makes noise, it moves, it can be chewed on, it costs almost nothing, and it usually smells like their owner. Most cats would love it.

Our cats go nuts when we play with them with a laser pointer! But be carefult not to shine it in their eyes.
An empty paper grocery bag with any handles cut off (never plastic because of the danger of smothering).
A good brushing! Most cats especially love having their faces and mouths brushed. BONUS--much less hairballs!
A nice sturdy scratching post!
Good natural cat litter with no silica or dangerous chemicals. Try Swheat Scoop or Worlds Best cat litter.
But your cat already has the best gift... A loving and caring person.

catnip filled toys, yarn, or my personal favorite. These things generally cost 5-10 bucks and they are very fun. There is a plastic rod with some fleece or something long and dangly on the end. They are really fun to play with a cat and you can get ones filled with catnip!!

depending on the age of the cat.. another cat...
if yours is under 1 year and is fixed it would greatly enjoy a friend (maybe not a first but eventually) around the same age

My girls always love the crinkly ballls toys and the .50 cent spongebob toys from walmart. your cat will let you know hat it wants. I would have to say....
a cat tower or a interactive toy that you both can enjoy

An empty pop box!!! They LOVE to climb into them!, If you dont have an empty pop box try a regular box, they like those even better!! You could also give them toys with bells somewhere on them thye love the noise when they play with them!=)
