I've seen my cats do this from time to time as well. In all my years of living with cats, I've figured out most all of their peculiarities, but this is one that I haven't been able to break the code on. My impression has always been that they don't like the menu choice but they seem to eat it anyway. It's possible you may want to clean the area near his food and his food dish. Perhaps there is an odor or taste lingering that he doesn't like. It certainly can't hurt. If you decide to change his food, you should do so gradually by mixing the old & the new. Never change a cat's diet overnight...it can cause digestive problems.
As for the water...my cat used to always put her paw in her water bowl, but I believe it was to make the water level rise so she could get a drink without putting her face all the way in the bowl. I got her a wider, water dish and make sure it's always full and she stopped doing it. Perhaps that will work on your kitty. As for tipping the bowl...again, it could be an accident as he's trying to get the water level to rise or he's just bored and naughty! Get a new water dish that is wider and make sure it's alway full. That may take care of everything! Good luck.

I have a cat that scratches around the bowl when he drinks his water, I also have a cat who dips his paw in. As for the scratching, I'm baffled myself but the paw dipping is to verify exactly where the water level is. My dipper started doing this as a kitten because he kept getting a snootful of water when he went to drink and it's now become a habit. Does he intentionally tip over his water? Strange as most cats don't like water. I end up with water on the floor occasionally but my kittens are at that terror age where they knock over everything.

I would think he scratches the floor around his food because cats scratch to lay down their territory. It is likely that he just wants everyone to know it is HIS food. I had a cat who loved to get in the sink if the tap was on. I think some cats just like water

don't worry. This is completely normal! The #1 reason animals will do something like that with their food is because cats and dogs hate eating or drinking from a bowl that their whiskers touch the sides of the bowls. Try getting a different bowl. A wide but shallow one would be best. But it also is because in the wild, cats will bury their food to save it for later.

In my 20+ years experience with cats, they've scratched around their food dish when they really LIKED something and didn't want anyone else to get it. (I guess in the olden days their ancestors covered their food to save for later). As far as the water dish goes, yes they will tip it. There is a reason they do that too, but I forget what it is. Buy the pet bowls that have a larger base, then he can't tip it over.

Not all cats are identical, remember the ad where the cat ate the food out of the tin using his paw? Some cats use their feet more than others and some bury their food when they've finished eating.
Try getting him some toys that he has to use his paws on, those balls in a puzzle maze are good.

My cat does that too. He puts his paw in the bowl to stop it moving while he eats and then wipes his mucky feet on the floor. Little ratbag!! He also likes to wash his feet in the bottom of the shower - hes so wierd but lovely

Wow - thought mine was the only one to do this. Did it from the very first time I got him home.
Appreciate the thoughts about hiding it from other people, but our cat is a contrary little b****r, so still convinced it's cos he doesn't approve, as he tends to do this & walk away!
Eats it eventually tho!! :)

Both cats and dogs do it. According to my observations, dogs do it to preserve the food for future, but cats do it to eliminate the smell they don't like. For examle, my cat tries to "bury" a cap of coffee exactly in the same manner as her excrements

some cats have a natural instinct to hide their food and cover up the scent of it to keep predators from finding it. so, this is another normal behavior some cats get from their wild roots. it is strange to see a cat do this though because it loods as if they're using the litter box.
