You can create cds in .cda format which play in all cd players (ie in your car, portable player) or.wma / .mp3 format (which only play in compatible cd players)

if you burn the files to a cd then this is just a data disc with mp3 files or wma files on it; it won't player in your portable cd player.

If you want to create a cd from your mp3 files that plays in your portable player, use a free tool called MP3 CD Doctor Lite
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/MP3_CD_Doctor/mp3cddoctor.html
add the files you want and burn the cd.

If for any reason you want to convert mp3 files to wma or wav etc, use another free tool called Free MP3 WMA Converter
http://www.download.com/Free-Mp3-Wma-Converter/3000-2140_4-10602212.html?tag=lst-0-1
just drag and drop your files, select an output path, the type of format you want to convert to, and click convert. Simple!

If you have a programme like Nero it will give you further options to create mp3 or wma cds

Don't you mean WMA? If you have any of these players you will be able to play MP3 music files. Windows Media Player, RealOne will both play MP3 formatted song files. There is an updated version of the Windows Media player and Real will send you updates every time it logs on to the Real Network. You don't have to convert these files for any of the players listed and both are free to download. Happy playing!
