Water is, in many religions around the world both practiced and defunct, a symbol of life. When a baby is born, it is preceeded by the "water breaking". Life on earth can't exist without water. We are composed of mostly water. Plants need water to grow. Water falls from the sky. The ocean is huge, dark and tempermental and for these reasons it is feared and deified. The theme is common everywhere, to everyone, no matter where they live or which religion they follow (maybe not the ocean bit, for landlocked cultures, but water all the same). Water is just one of a number of common religious themes throughout the world.

Take Christiantiy and Islam for example, water symbolises getting clear of sins in both of them (babtism - religious washing before prayer), although i think it's more expressed in Islam. In Islam, water is also considered as protection from future sins. Mohammad (pbuh) used to perform religious washing over the previously performed one in order to keep himself protected from potential sins.

God bless u all
