I have been told that people from England or Ireland need only picture ID to travel to Ireland from England and am wondering if that is the same for foreigners who have been visiting England and want to go to Ireland but do not have their passports

Anyone travelling to Southern Ireland needs a passport...but anyone from the UK with a British Commonwealth passport travelling to Northern Ireland only needs picture ID as Northern Ireland is part of the UK.. hope this helps

If you are British you do not require a passport. A picture ID such as a driving licence is acceptable. I lost my passport in Ireland once but was able to board a flight from Cork to London using my driving licence.

If you are a foreigner it is more problematic. As an EU citizen, you probably will be okay. Any foreigner who would normally need a visa will still require one. But. If you don't fly to the Republic, travel via Northern Ireland and drive or catch the train, there are no border checks and the Guards rarely bother well-dressed foreigners.

If your travelling to Southern Ireland by air you can use your driving licence as long as its the picture identity one, otherwise its a passport only.
