This reading should help:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/bit_torrent...

2) When using the bittorent files in isohunt, mininova, and other bittorent sites, make sure that the file you want to download at least has 1 source. That way, you will be able to download something at least. For faster and better connections, choose the files with the most number of leechers and at least 2-5 sources. The more leechers, the better in my opinion because you don't just get the information from the sources.
Here is how it works, if there are say, 10 leechers and 2 sources, a percentage of the data that you are trying to download is can be found in the other 10 leechers, so that means, you will be able to connect to 10 servers and download data from them simultaneously. The source come into the picture when the data you need to complete the torrent is no longer found in the other 10 leechers so you connect to those 2 sources and get the rest. If there is only 1 source, there might be times when your download activity is zero because the source is currently offline.
Hope that helps!

Above covers the "what" well enough that I really don't need to re-explain it, so I'll stick to the "why" and "when"

Why? - is the best source for either larger files (software, entire albums, high-quality movies, etc.), as opposed to p2p aps like Limewire which are best used for smaller file sharing.

Main advantages - because most torrents a listed via specified sites/forums, you get a much better idea of what you are getting, and moderators always have the ability to remove bogus content. It also solves the problem of the clutter caused by poorly or incorrectly tagged/named content as one often encounters on regular p2p programs.

Personally, I make good use of both Limewire Pro and several torrent hosts - very little I can't ever get hold of :)

It is illegal to down load copyrighted torrents and you'll end up in trouble. My partner and i suggest having a VPN service whenever accessing torrents. I'm using http://www.vpnmaster.org theyallow torrents on the European servers.
