a friend of mine said that they are not as loyal as other dogs and they'll simply follow anyone who is nice to them...is this true?

Shih tzus are great dogs! Atleast my two( Domino and London) are. They do love people but they are very loyal and protective of there owner. Don't let a friends opinion change your mind if youd like to get one. All dogs have different personalities as well.......even if they are the same breed!

Shih Tzu's were bred in China years ago, as royal companions. At one time only Chinese royalty could own them. They are very loyal and loving! We have two of them, and foster others through a rescue group. No, your friend is NOT correct! One of ours is a female who still believes she is royalty! She has completely attached herself to my husband, and although she loves everyone else, if he is around, it's like no one else in the world exists. She'll do whatever it takes to get to wherever he is, and feels she MUST be at his side, on his lap, cuddled up to him in bed, hogging his pillow....you get the picture! One word of advise - DO NOT BUY ANY PUPPIES FROM A PET STORE! Despite what they tell you, all puppies sold at pet stores come from puppy mills. Do some research on the web and you will find some very disturbing information on them. Check out prisonersofgreed.org and you'll get a good view of what they're really like.

They are excellent pets and as with many breeds of dogs, tend to be friendly to all people. They are not suited as a guard dog or a watch dog. They need a lap to call their own and are not usually particular who the lap is attached to if their own person is not available. They are not high-energy dogs and will not be a good choice if you want to go hiking in the woods or jog a few miles during the day.

I have 2 and they are very loyal, but also friendly they will follow a stranger but they know their master. They get very protective of their toys, and their space. Even though mine have been together for years they still squabble every once in a while and one of them hates our English Bulldog
