The USA is obsessed with the concept of world dominance. It has refused to learn from history and its experience in Vietnam. It could not prevent Vietnam from being a communist state. It had fueled Afghanistan crisis and now trying to dose it off. Withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan will not be that easy and the change of guard in White House will have least impact on taking such a decision.

The Commander In Chief is the President, what democrats do is whine and grandstand and cut all appropriations for better equipment, better intelligence gathering and new weapons systems, and then accuse Bush of not providing our troops with what they need. They work behind the scenes with the enemy, as Ted Kennedy has been revealed having done with the Soviet Union during the Reagan years. The American forces want to be out of Iraq and Afghan, but as long as there are people there ATTACKING our forces we must stay, because they will just attack us somewhere else and when you must fight you take the fight to the enemy's house, because anyone who wants to fight a war on their own land is a fool. We were minding our own business on 9/11, until the forces responsible for those attacks understand they had better leave us alone, there will be no mercy, no relief. Ignoring the threat and trying to reinvent history later as the Clinton administration did, didn't make us any safer. When Iraq settles down, civilizes, and stops the violence that has been a part of their culture long before the USA existed, things will be better over there. I'd be perfectly content to see our forces redeploy, but not if that real estate is going to be used by others
against us. As for being "occupiers" don't worry, China and Russia already have advisors there ready to bring in their troops if we leave, no surprise as they have tried to arm all the belligerent states in the world and stall any UN action that could peacefully resolve matters (I don't mean just endless talk and no action) before war becomes neccesary. The sooner that oil is replaced as a neccessity the better off the world will be in more ways than one. Of course we have a lot more food in the USA, and all the countries who want us out are never shy about wanting food, money or technical assistance or goods from the USA. What will the arabs do if we convert our grain and corn to gasoline instead of using their oil, and stop shipping them that food?

The President is still commander in chief and controls foreign policy. So only he can bring the troops home. At best the democrats could cut funding for the war but risk being accused of "abandoning the troops" that could make them unpopular with the voting public. So we have a catch-22 siuation where neither is in any position to arm twist the other.

No the Democrats have stated they will not pull out of Iraq anytime soon, as they put it, we should not have gone to war with Iraq, but now that we are there we cannot afford to lose. Most of them still support the war in Afghanistan. If you really thought that the Democrats would stop the war immediately was severely fooled.

I served in Central America during a time when the Democrats were working to sabotage the efforts of a Republican president. I feel sorry for our troops because I remember just how it felt to have your efforts sabotaged by a bunch of politicians whose only loyalty is to their political party.

The good news is that we achieved our goals in Central America despite the Democrats. Maybe if we are lucky we can still win despite all the roadblocks the Democrats will throw up.

I don't think so. Victory in Iraq and Afghanistan is the big American interest. Troops withdrawal is off the table for sure.

As much as I would like to say it will end the war, the fact is that is unlikely. Until there is a legitimate government in power that has the ability to govern and protect itself the chances of US withdrawl from the area and very slim.

Looks like we're going to find out. One thing though, it was Democrats John Kennedy who got us into, and then escalated Viet Nam, it was Republicans Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford who pulled us out.

Hey, we can't just not finish what we started. If those troops pull out, all that work and everything those 3000 fallen troops worked for will collapse and be for nothing.
