I do detailed work that takes many hours and I'm wondering if I'm better off painting with an easel or a drafting table? My main concern here being my posture and developing back pain.

I use either a standing easel or a table top easel. A drafting table lies at the wrong angle for proper perspective in painting.

An easel is best, as the previous answerer mentioned, to get your perspective right, and also for even lighting.

Use a mahl stick to rest your arm while painting detail, and invest in a good office chair if you're going to sit. Bend forward from your hips instead of your waist, and you should be good to go.

A mahl stick is a thick wooden dowel with a padded leather tip - you rest the padded tip on a dry spot on your painting or on the easel, holding the other end with your non-painting hand, then you have a rest for the wrist on your painting hand.

The others who have answered have given great answers, but I would say that if you are doing detailed work for long hours you will want to sit. I paint at a level table, and that works fine for me. I guess it depends on how large your surface is (I paint fairly small). You can get a nice cushy chair with good support at a regular table.
