"Prostrate yourself before Adam". They all prostrated themselves except Satan, who refused to prostrate himself.
" Why did you not prostrate yourself when i commanded you ?" He asked.
"I am nobler then he," He replied " you created me from fire, but you created him form clay."
He said "Get down hence!" Humble shall you henceforth be."
He replied: "Reprieve me till the day of resurrection."
"You are reprieve," said he.
"because you have led me into sin," He declared, "i will waylay your servants as they walk on your straight path, the spring upon them from the front and from the rear, from their right and from their left. Then you will find the greater part of them ungrateful."
"Begone !" he said. "A despicable outcast you shall henceforth be. As for those that follow you , I shall fill Hell with you all."
And you can clearly see it says "Why did you not prostrate when i commanded you ?" He asked.
Satan was a Jinn true, but he was raised to be among angels because he was the best of all the Jinn and worshiped God perfectly. He was angry and jealous when asked to prostrate to Adam as he felt he was Superior having been created thousands of years before Adam. That's why he was with the angels and he was included in being asked to prostrate.

did the Jinn start as angels as they would have in the BIble
satan is a fallen angel
although I think Satan ultimately fell because He would not glorify God and led a rebellion instead... the angels were meant to serve the redeemed and it is entirely possible Satan rebelled over the idea of serving this Adam creature made from dust who appeared so much lower than himself

If Satan was not an angell but a jinn then he has done nothing wrong but then this is a big contradiction with Thora and the Bible who estated clearly that Satan was a fallen angell .....so Mohamed came again with a different message ,( like so manny others)other then what was written in Thora and Bible ,so Quran is not a confirmation of Thora and Bible but contradict flagrant with both of them ...now go figure out why .:))

The story of Satan was mentioned in the holy Quran in different chapters and he refused directly the order because of two bad characters considered the source of all other sins i.e: arrogance and envy. Adam and Eve both disobey but they felt sorry and repent fast so they were forgiven.

the point you missed is that although Satan was a jinn he prayed & obeyed the Lord so perfectly so that the Lord let him among the angels & actually rose his rank to an angel.so he should have obeyed & bowed.
That's what they say, not my idea.

he will be punished bcos he has promised to led all the human and he Jinns go astray, becoming sinners and nonbeliever as him.
Why he want to that, bcos of his pride and arrogance for being strip from God grace of not following His command to bow.

Maybe they thought that the "Jinns" were a subcategory of the "angels" .... It doesn't specify that the two terms are mutually exclusive.

How has "satan" been punished, as he still walks freely in the heavens?
Soon however, there will be a major shake up on our world, and in the heavens.
And we will have more than ONE evil being to contend with!
